I love Sundays, because it means I get to watch a new episode of Kaya-chan Isn’t Scary! This series has been a fun one to follow so far, and I’m going to state right here and now that I will be continuing to watch Kaya-chan Isn’t Scary during the Winter 2026 anime season. It’s a nice way for me to chill during my week. Anyway, let’s get into talking about the episode!
Mirrors Aren’t Scary
During an ordinary school day, Kaya and her classmates are in class and drawing. Kaya finishes her lineart and wants to color, only to see that she doesn’t have a black crayon. She isn’t even an isolated incident either, because other students in her class report not having the black crayon in their container.
As it turns out, the younger sibling of one of Kaya’s classmates had taken the black crayons to color on a mirror, as he feels that the mirror is scary. This does ultimately require the mirror to get cleaned up, but it seems like there was a good reason for the kid to be coloring on the mirror.
Because in that mirror was a ghost that tries to drag the teacher for the younger sibling of one of Kaya’s classmates into the mirror, only for Kaya to seemingly beat that spirit up. While it’s played that Kaya did beat the ghost, there’s a scene at the end of this section that suggests that there’s more to the story.
And just like in the previous episode, there’s a post credits scene that connects to this episode that’s basically just “sometimes, people will change based on the littlest stuff, and you may not even realize it!”, and we yet again get a look at that scene from the end of this section. Unfortunately, it doesn’t get expanded upon in the remainder of this episode, but hopefully it gets explained later in the anime. I’m genuinely curious to see where that plotline ends up.
This section was a fun part to the episode. Considering how serious the other two parts of this episode are, there needed to be something on the lighter side to help ease into the episode. Having this provides that.
The Pool Isn’t Scary
Kaya and her class go to the pool, where Kaya decides not to swim, as it appears that she doesn’t know how to swim, and instead sits on the side, which unfortunately causes one of her classmates to call her “lame-o”.
Unfortunately, there’s a ghost at the pool that can drag kids under the water and have them lay down on the pool floor, which would cause them to silently drown. This is also accompanied by a voice over that explains that in childcare settings, the activity of the other kids can camouflage a drowning child who’s silently drowning.
But Kaya beats up the ghost, rescues the kid, the kid apologizes, and justice is served. Yay! 😀
Due to this being a more serious part of the episode (a kid almost drowned), it was certainly a good way to bridge between Mirrors Aren’t Scary and the next segment.
Uncle Mob Isn’t Scary?
Chie finally runs into Mob, and finds out he’s…kind of been stalking Kaya. However, he’s doing it because he saw her take down a specter (which started as a ghost) that was following him when she was younger. Unfortunately, I don’t think I can say much more than that without absolutely wrecking the feelings of this section of the episode. But trust me when I say that when we go from the more lighthearted Mirrors Aren’t Scary to the events of The Pool Isn’t Scary, this section is just a natural progression.
Now, I don’t approve of what Mob did. But I’ve been enjoying seeing Kaya do her things! However, I’m willing to constantly be like “I don’t approve of what Mob did, btw” while I cover this series, as I think that everything else about this series outweighs that one issue I have with it so far.
I’m excited to see where Kaya-chan Isn’t Scary goes from here!
