Doctor Elise: The Royal Lady with the Lamp Episode 4 – “Which Way the Wind Blows”

The episode begins with Graham and Elise having gone to meet the other apprentices, with one of them showing Elise around the main hospital. This apprentice, Hans, also informs Elise of her duties in this portion of the hospital: give a simple examination, and then inform a doctor for them to provide the treatment. At that time, however, a patient comes in needing treatment. After Hans does his examination, he asks one of the other apprentices to get a tool and Doctor Hans. As that apprentice runs off, however, Elise recognizes that Hans’ examination was a bit incorrect, as with the condition this patient had, he could potentially die. Elise decides to take matters into her own hands, asking to borrow Hans’ stethoscope. When Hans hesitates to provide it, however, one of the other apprentices grabs a stethoscope. After listening to one of the lungs for a bit, Elise then asks for an injection needle. She does receive one, and she stabs into the lung, which does help, eventually getting the patient back to normal. Doctor Graham walks in on the patient being back to regular levels, and when asked what happened, Elise explained her thought process. Graham is impressed, and even compliments Elise. Later, Elise is walking through the hallway, when someone calls out to her to help with a patient. Elise goes off to help, as it is in her nature to not ignore a patient.

Outside, Hans and one of the other apprentices are decorating for a festival. The other apprentice says that Hans should ask Elise to go to the festival with him, but Hans said that he doesn’t think he’d be a good match for Elise. Back inside of the hospital, Elise tells Graham about an operation she did, which made Graham more impressed. Graham then tells Elise about the festival, and how the employees tended to not work overtime to be able to enjoy the festival. Of course, during this, the viewers see an alleyway have some blood spill out of it. Of course, during this conversation, a patient arrives, and both Graham and Elise go off to check on the patient. We see the patient, as well as a blonde haired man. Graham initially says that the operation would be impossible, but Elise steps up and says she’ll do it. And when Elise steps up, the blonde haired man has a reaction. As it turns out, this blonde haired man is the crown prince under a disguise spell. He’s here for an inspection, but more importantly, to check on Elise. The crown prince’s subordinate with him, who is the patient we saw earlier, knows the area well, and even knows a path to go directly to the hospital. Of course, on this path, the two run into someone who first threatens them with a knife, and then pulls out a gun and shoots it.

Back in the present, however, Elise describes to Graham what had to be done. When Graham says that there would need to be another assistant, the crown prince steps up. Elise leads the two, and they manage to successfully remove the spleen. After the surgery, Elise talks to the crown prince, who says that the name for his disguise is Ron. Here, Elise reveals that members of the imperial family are charged more, but the crown prince doesn’t seem to mind too much. He does ask for the patient to be transferred to another hospital, which Elise agrees to.

Over in the other hospital, the doctor that had figured out that the emperor had diabetes through Elise’s tip was talking to the director of the hospital that Elise works at. The director refuses to believe it until the other doctor points out that the surgery was done in his hospital. When asked which doctor did the operation, the answer comes out to be Doctor Graham. Back in the hospital, Graham gets asked by one of the apprentices to head to see the director, regarding the surgery. The two head off, which is where the episode ends.

This is a really solid episode. Everything feels like it comes naturally, and while I was thrown a little off-track when the backtrack to see what caused the patient to get shot, however, I was quickly able to get back on track with the story. I’m interested to see where the story goes next week, as Elise seems like she still has a long way to go to prove that being a doctor is more important than her becoming empress.
