It’s Sunday, which means it’s my favorite time of the week! It’s cozy grandparent anime time! This is why I love the weekend: I get a chance to slow down and enjoy stuff like this!
The episode begins with Grandpa and Grandma reflecting on their lives when they were younger, more specifically, their school lives. During this conversation, we learn more about their past together, and how Grandma had come to work on the same farm that Grandpa worked on due to a war, where she met Grandpa. She then teases Grandpa by saying that there are things that you can’t find in Tokyo that you can find here…and then refusing to elaborate. This was a nice and wholesome section of the episode and a great way to start it! I love how we’re getting to learn more about them and their past!
The next section involves Shiori getting her grandparents a video game system and a game, stating that it’s supposed to be helpful in preventing dementia. It begins with the two getting stuck talking to an NPC, and then they begin questioning things about the game using real-life logic, but the two manage to eventually get past it and enjoy the game as a game. The next day…the two managed to get all of the achievements. Which means this is either a console that would now be considered retro, or they pulled an all-nighter. I’m not complaining either way, this section of the episode was still fun.
Then, Mino visits Grandpa and Grandma, and is excited to see Shiori, though the latter is not excited to see Mino, and even seems to be upset with her. The two bicker, and Shiori says something that Grandpa ends up overhearing…and it breaks him. Shiori manages to fix him by saying that she doesn’t hate him, however, and…yeah, I can’t think of anything to say for this segment. I guess it’s nice to see Mino and Shiori interact? This one just didn’t stand out to me all that much.
One night, Grandpa has the hourglass dream. Ever since he and Grandma turned young again, he’s been having the dream every night. He leans against the hourglass, and eventually falls and causes the hourglass to spin. When he wakes up, he’s old again. Despite this, however, he still just as fit as he did when he was young. The two visit Takahiro, who checks Grandpa and sees that his organs appear to have gone back to how they were before he turned young again. The two then decide to try and just deal with this.
Mino’s dad visits, surprised to see Grandpa old again. The two decide to arm wrestle, and after the promise of an open-air bath, Grandpa manages to win. At some point afterward, Grandma and Grandpa visit a home improvement store, where people seem to have noticed them, and Grandpa suggests pretending to not be married. When an employee walks up to them asking if they need help, Grandpa is about to play into the “grandparent with granddaughter” lie, but Grandma insists that they’re married.
There’s also a sweet treat that Grandma has been refraining from eating around Grandpa due to him turning young again. She sneaks one for a snack at night, and Grandpa catches her, but said that he wants her to be happy. He also eats one, though is careful with it.
We then get to find out more about Grandpa and Grandma, and how Grandma had moved somewhere that she felt she didn’t fit in and tended to spend time at a shrine when she had it, meeting Grandpa. Each day, the two would talk, with Grandma insisting that he shouldn’t come near her. Cut back to the present day, and the two are enjoying time together. Grandpa then has the hourglass dream again (which hasn’t happened for a while), and after noticing that sand has been falling out of the hourglass, he flips it over, causing him to wake up young again. He and Grandma then have a conversation, getting on the topic of how long they’re going to live, and Grandpa points out the sand falling out of the hourglass, meaning they won’t live forever.
This was a sweet episode! It was interesting to see how the story chose to explore the hourglass being flipped, as that probably would’ve been a huge question on people’s minds. I love the interactions that Grandpa and Grandma have, and the story feels so fun! I definitely want to come back next week to see what occurs!
