Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again Episode 4 – “Grandpa and Grandma and the Culture Festival”

Life may get hectic for me, and then I turn on this series and it feels like, even for just a moment, everything’s alright. Seriously, this show is so wholesome so far, I doubt that anything could happen to make me surprised at the fact that they did it! …right? Let’s just get into the review.

The episode begins with the boys from Episode 2 walking near the farm that Grandpa and Grandma own again, this time with the boys looking at cars in a book or magazine of some kind, and pointing out how there wouldn’t be many import cars due to how much snow they get and how low the cars would be to the ground. Grandma sees them and decides to let them know about spraying that would be occurring later, and that, despite the chemicals being used not being dangerous, to find a detour if it bothers them. The boys accept this, and then they see Grandpa drive by with a sprayer, which makes the boys comment that there are Ferraris here. There is a little add-on that explains what the sprayer is, and how they are commonly shared due to being expensive, and this felt like a nice fun fact to learn.

The next section has Grandpa over with Shouta and his grandpa, needing to clean a storehouse, with Shouta’s grandpa saying that he wanted everything thrown out. Shouta finds a black box and asks about it, to which his grandpa asks to be left alone while he thinks about it. While they leave him alone, Shouta calls the Kitamachi Board of Education regarding getting items preserved. Later, Shouta’s grandpa comes out and states that he’s planning on keeping the box and plans to get the storehouse demolished. Grandpa and Shouta have a conversation about Shouta’s future, where Shouta reveals he wants to become a professional soccer player and, while wanting to move to Tokyo, he feels like staying here and helping with his grandpa’s land. Shouta, overhearing this conversation, ends up canceling the demolition. This was a rather heartwarming section of the episode, and it develops a bond between Grandpa and Shouta.

We then go to Shiori, who’s at the public wing of the university’s library to study. She ends up seeing Grandpa while she’s there, and looks over to see him studying high school textbooks because Grandpa never got to advance in his schooling when he was school age. This ends up giving Shiori the motivation to study, and after her midterms, she even thanks Grandpa (though he doesn’t know the reason why). Meanwhile, Mino is talking to her friends regarding a silver-haired couple, but Mino brushes it off and says that she needs to go home. We next see her with Shouta as they are spending time together studying and with Shouta listening to what Mino has to say. At one point, he heads to the bathroom, trying to get his mind to not think of this as a date…even though it completely feels like one. I love the sweet little interactions like this, as it helps us to understand the characters a bit more.

After that, Mino invites her grandparents to go to her school’s culture festival, and at first, they decline due to pre-existing plans…but when Grandpa realizes that their plans don’t overlap with the festival, they end up going. While at the festival, some drinks get spilled on Grandma, so one of the students who knows someone in the fashion design club takes Grandma there to get a change of clothes…but it ends up becoming a mess as they end up treating her like a doll. Grandpa is eventually let in, however, and we see Grandma in a school uniform, with her greeting Grandpa with mannerisms that she had in the past. The two eat together, with Grandpa doing some teasing. After some time, Grandma appears to go back to her usual mannerisms, to Grandpa’s relief.

Well. We better hope that doesn’t end up counting as foreshadowing for something that will happen later.

Anyway, Grandpa and Grandma visit the maid cafe that’s being run by Mino’s class, but it’s somewhat dead customer-wise because another class got help from their guardians to make an authentic ramen shop. Looking for a way to get more customers, Grandpa ends up helping out as a butler, attracting elderly women. After a while, Grandpa and Grandma look through a more historical section and find an image that contains people that Grandma recognizes. She makes a comment about how Grandpa would’ve been in the picture if he advanced and then seems like she regrets it, but Grandpa points out that his not being in the photo is just proof that he was by her side. Of course, the two end up realizing that they’re being recorded, and end up leaving.

We also get to see Shouta acting nervous about asking Mino to the bonfire, mainly because Grandma was with her. Grandpa, noticing this, decides that he and Grandma have overstayed their welcome, and ends up dragging Grandma home, pointing out that there are times when it’s their duty to NOT watch the kids. The entire culture festival was fun, and it helped with developing some of the characters a bit more, which is always fun to see.

Then, Grandma is seen in the hourglass dream area, commenting about how she and Grandpa need to turn old again for some important business. She goes to turn the hourglass but ends up hitting a pillar of it instead. Later, the old-yet-again Grandpa wakes up and sees…

Y’know what? No! I’m not going to say what he sees yet! From the preview (which I should’ve pointed out in my review of Episode 1, but yes, previews are included in the episodes!) for next week’s episode, what he sees appears to be the main focus of the episode, even having it become the title for next week’s episode. All I will say is that what he saw caught me a bit…off-guard, let’s say, even though this isn’t the first hourglass-originating shenanigans that’s in this series. Though it’s probably the fact that this time it was at the end of the episode rather than me finding out about it in a preview.

Overall, this episode was super fun…except for the ending that caught me off-guard, but let’s ignore that! I couldn’t pick up on anything in the episode that was like the jokes in the previous episodes that made it seem like Mino wanted to marry her grandpa…so I’m raising my rating system to 9.7 golden apples out of 10. While I’d love to raise it to a full 10, I’m still hesitant as I don’t know if those will return, so it’s better to be safe than to be sorry. But don’t take my rating system too seriously: it’s just for fun! I guess I’ll see y’all next week when the next episode comes out!
