Dragon Ball DAIMA Episode 13 – “Surprise”

When I remembered earlier this week what this episode’s name was, Crunchyroll’s decision not to include the return of the subtitled version of Dragon Ball Daima in their seasonal lineup made sense and actually felt intentional I guess you could say they surprised us with this, huh? …okay, I’ll get into the writeup, I’m delaying you enough already.

The episode begins with the one known as Gomah finding out that Goku and the others have the Dragon Balls from the Third and Second Demon Worlds, realizing that their next stop would be the First Demon World…so tells Shin’s older brother to disable Warp-sama to ensure that they can’t get the next Dragon Ball. Screw you, Gomah.

Arinsu also comments that she now has all three Dragon Balls (because Glorio technically works for her), which makes my Glorio skeptic butt certain that Glorio’s going to end up betraying Goku and the others and help Arinsu’s goals. And if I’m wrong, then someone throw me into traffic to isekai me. For legal reasons, I have to say that the previous sentence is a joke.

Meanwhile, the ship is flying smoothly…until it begins going down because technological issues! They end up managing to land on a planet…only to find out from Neva that they’re currently on the second most dangerous planet in the entirety of the Demon Realm! FUN!

Bulma and Panzy (with Hybis as a step stool) then need to work on making repairs to the ship, but everything’s interrupted when a kid of the species of this planet comes over and sits down, its dog following it. Meaning while Bulma and Panzy repair the ship, the boys go to hide. Goku ends up coming out into the open, however, and now the boys are trying to keep the kid and their dog distracted to allow Bulma and Panzy to do repairs. There were some cool scenes in this section, but…I don’t know if it was just me, but this section felt too long, as if they couldn’t really go on to more story in this episode. As they already used up their time killing measures (brief recap of the series as a whole before the opening, having a title card instead of putting the title in the corner of an episode, and having the eyecatches), they probably had more time to kill than those could cover.

But the episode does end with the ship getting fixed, and everyone getting back on and heading out to who knows where next.

Are you guys ready for a surprise? I actually didn’t like this episode. And I know what you’re thinking, “what? an episode of Daima that Sara doesn’t like?”, to which I respond with “what? is it a crime to dislike even one episode of a series I like now?”. I didn’t really feel like this episode was entertaining, even when comparing it to episodes of the original Dragon Ball anime that I remember. The fact that Daima is already starting its second cour off on a bad foot for me is bad…but it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s game over yet. Every series has its weaker episodes, and you can’t expect a series to just be banger after banger.

Based on the preview, I think next episode will end up being better than this one. Of course, there’s no way to know that for certain until next week. After all, I was certainly surprised when I realized that this episode wasn’t as good as I thought it would be!

…have I already worn the joke dry?
