Dragon Ball DAIMA Episode 18 – “Awakening”

Love is in the air everywhere…except for the palace in the First Demon World. Things are currently too heated there for love to properly bloom. Yeah, this is the perfect episode of the perfect series to watch on Valentine’s Day! …can you tell that I legitimately don’t care about Valentine’s Day and would much rather spend my time just doing what I want instead of jumping headfirst into what society believes I should be doing. And what I want to do is talk to you about this episode of Dragon Ball Daima.

The episode begins with Goku transforming into his Super Saiyan 3, with Goku and Gomah continuing to bash it out. Kuu gets inspired by this and gets a chocolate chip cookie for Duu to eat, causing Duu to get energized and takes inspiration from Goku to power up, causing both Duu and the Tamagami of the First Demon World to join in the fight. However, Duu’s power up doesn’t last forever, as when the energy of the cookie runs out, so does Duu’s transformation.

While at first it appears that Goku and Gomah are both on equal terms, Gomah does manage to overpower Goku’s current form. But because this is Dragon Ball and we can’t have Goku go down that easily, we have Neva ex-machina to make Super Saiyan 4 canon in Dragon Ball. When watching the episode myself, I was asking myself “is this the fabled Super Saiyan 4 that I’ve heard talks of in the wonderous world known as the internet, or is this some other form that Toriyama created exclusively for Dragon Ball Daima?”. Due to a post my mom made to her social media accounts, however, I am able to state that this is Super Saiyan 4 (and since she’s watched Dragon Ball GT, I’m trusting her when she says that this is Super Saiyan 4 Goku) and not just some random transformation created exclusively for Daima.

With this new transformation, Goku and Gomah proceed to clash again, but even with Goku’s new abilities, he’s unable to take down Gomah, with Gomah even using the power of the Evil Third Eye to forcefully power Goku back down into his base form, which isn’t good for us.

As this is happening and everyone is watching, Arinsu contacts Glorio and tells him to get the Dragon Balls that he gathered with the help of Goku and the crew, which Glorio does do (as would be understandable for Hybis, as he doesn’t seem to have any attachment to the Dragon Balls). When Glorio brings them over, Arinsu asks Glorio to bring the Demon Realm’s version of Shenron out, as he knows the Namekian to do so.

Oh hell yes, this is exactly what I’ve been waiting for.

Glorio does bring out this Shenron, and makes A WISH. Both based on the ending of this episode and the preview for the next episode, it’s not clear what the wish he made was (since I don’t speak Namekian). However, based on the title of the next episode (Betrayal), I can see this going one of two ways.

The first way (and the way that I think is more likely for the show to go down plotwise, considering the remaining episode count if we only do one episode a week) is that the betrayal consists of Glorio betraying Arinsu, and wishing for Goku and the others who were impacted by Gomah’s wish to become their regular age again. Really the only evidence I have for this is how I expect Dragon Ball pacing to be and the fact that one of the Namekian words stated by Glorio contains the English word “child”, but I’m not going to discredit it as an option.

The OTHER way I see this going is that the betrayal consists of Glorio betraying Goku and the crew, and helping Arinsu with her goals. While this is the way that I feel most inclined to (as I’m just a natural born Glorio skeptic), if we assume that Episodes 19 and 20 (and any other episodes that air between now and the 28th, if they decide one week to just randomly air a new episode before scheduled time) are going to be standard-length episodes, this option would most likely need to be heavily rushed, which most likely wouldn’t go over well with the fandom. And while the preview appears to set up THIS as the way it’s going to go, it could be a way of subverting our expectations and providing the first way instead. However, my gut is telling me not to let go of this option, just because I have the feeling Arinsu didn’t teach Glorio enough Namekian to be able to support Goku and the gang.

WE’RE GETTING SO CLOSE TO THE END, AND IT SEEMS LIKE NEXT WEEK, I GET TO FIND OUT WHETHER OR NOT MY SKEPTICISM OF GLORIO ALL THE WAY UP TO THE END WAS WORTH IT OR NOT, LET’S FREAKING GO! Even if Super Saiyan 4 left me confused ever since it entered the equation due to me having not watched GT, I still found this episode to be enjoyable. I have been LOVING this series so far, and to be honest, I’m going to miss it once the 28th is said and done. However, it’s been nice to return to the formula of the original Dragon Ball even if just for a small series like this one, and it’ll be interesting to see how this all ends up wrapping up both next week and the week after that.
