Ummm insert a bible verse here or something, because angels make me think the bible, and the bible is a book. Yeah, no, I shouldn’t be dragging religion into this unless the show does so as well, because last I checked, religious texts hold no bearing in the medical drama known as Ameku M.D.: Doctor Detective. And if somehow this ends up being proven wrong next week, then I guess I’ll just crawl into a hole.
Anyway, the episode begins with a boy in a room of the hospital at night. There’s an element of intrigue: how’d this angel exist? Are angels real in the world of Ameku M.D.? And if they do exist, does that mean that God exists as well? AM I EVEN ASKING QUESTIONS THAT ARE STILL RELEVANT TO THE MYSTERY?!
But that morning, Takao gets asked by another doctor to check out three other patients that were getting better but all had events occur that put them backward in the recovery process. So, of course, Takao, Takanashi, and the other female doctor that joins them on their cases head to the room that the three boys are in…and it seems like the other female doctor is already familiar with them, because they refer to her as “gyaru doctor”. Now, I’m not someone who knows the gyaru aesthetic like the back of my hand, but based on what I do know, the female doctor does not match the gyaru aesthetic, as the gyaru aesthetic was started to go against the norms of Japanese fashion culture, and from my (again, limited!) understanding, the female doctor is still within Japanese fashion culture.
Friendly reminder that I am not all that well versed in the fashion part of Japanese culture, so my analysis here could be inaccurate! If you are more educated on this part of Japanese culture, please feel free to either agree or disagree with my claim in the comments! And if I’m wrong, please feel free to give me pointers as to where I can educate myself more on the fashion part of Japanese culture!
I think this is the perfect way to show that these kids are brats and bullies! And while viewers may roll their eyes and state that this automatically means that the characters are annoying, you need to keep in mind that the frontal lobe is still developing for these kids, as well as whatever combination of circumstances that’s happening at their home that the series won’t get into due to it not being important to the story, there could be reasonable justification as to why these kids are acting this way.
Anyway, Takao’s investigation only consists of opening a window, looking out of it, and closing the window, before being all “nope, we’ve don’t need to diagnose these kids”, and instead goes to investigate the room of the kid who saw the angel. At least…that was the plan, because as far as everyone was aware, the kid and their family were going to be out of the room for a while.
Unfortunately, that assumption was incorrect, and Takao runs into the kid after leaving the room, with the kid asking for Takao to read picture books to him again. Awww.
Takao doesn’t share this sentiment, however, and instead, runs off, getting overrun by emotions. We learn that it is because Takao grew a bond with the kid during her residency, and would commonly sneak off to hang out with the kid, which is really sweet. However, around 2 or so years after being discharged, the kid had to get readmitted into the hospital.
I enjoyed the confrontation scene between Takanashi and Takao in Takao’s office, with Takao afraid that the kid that she grew close to will die. Needless to say, the angel visits again, and later that day, something occurs to cause the heart of one of the kids to stop. Now, that’s leading me to wonder…what’s the mystery that’s going to be figured out? How the angel could even look like it exists? Why the symptoms of the other three boys suddenly flared up? BOTH?!
However, just like our other multi-part mysteries, it feels like this episode is just the prologue to the case, and we’ll get one or more episodes dealing with the mystery itself. Regardless, I’m excited to see how this ends up playing out. But I swear, if angels are real in the world of Ameku M.D.: Doctor Detective, I don’t know how I’m going to take it, because this world is clearly intended to be more on the realistic side.
