Okay, I’m going to get a grievance of mine out now, and then leave why I can understand why this decision was made when I get to the point that explains it: we don’t get to see Takao’s mind palace thing where she puts all the pieces together. Also, I don’t know if I’m just blind, but I don’t think we had anything showing the title of the next episode. These are just small things, but there’s (in my opinion) a good reason as to why these weren’t included.
The episode begins with us finding out that the kid whose heart stopped did get their heart to start back up again, which is always a good sign. However, during this, Takao manages to figure out part of the truth of the case. She then goes to where the three older kids are staying, and tells them that they’re getting discharged. Unfortunately, I can’t go too much more into detail about this section of the story without spoiling the answer of the mystery, but I will say that the answer of the mystery does make me change my mind about these guys a bit.
But not everything’s sunshine and rainbows, because the kid that Takao helped to take care of during her residency had their blood pressure drop, and is getting closer to death…and he wanted to see Takao one last time. My heartstrings. They’re being tugged.
But Takao does go there, and reads the picture book to the kid one last time, as we watch him die on screen. This is exactly why hints towards the next case and the mind palace thing were skipped – more time to have the scenes that have it register for us that the kid is dead. And it feels like someone ripped a freaking hole in my chest and pulled out my heart, because looking back on this entire event makes me feel sad. And since this happens on Christmas Eve in the world of Ameku M.D.: Doctor Detective, that family’s going to have just a Christmas. Not a merry one. There’s no way a recent death in the family could cause a Christmas to be merry.
But, yeah, my original episode split prediction was off. We had the second two episode mystery here instead of at the end of the series…and that’s all assuming that I’m correct in this mystery not having the signs of having been fully solved but still being fully solved to make an emotional moment hit harder.
Meine Herzenssaiten are aching. Probably because my heart has been ripped out of my chest and stomped on until it’s nothing more than a bloody stain on the ground. This isn’t as bad as what happened during the finale of the anime that I wrote for review during the Spring 2024 season, but it easily takes second place. Though, to be fair, I was dealing with events like the ones in that first place winner, so I think it’s eternally keeping first place just because I don’t think I’m going to have the compound of “show that I’m watching covering those events” and “me experiencing those events” ever again. But if I do, well then c’est la vie. Can’t exactly control it.
Now, I don’t know what to expect for the next episode. But PLEASE have the ending of the mystery be something less depressing than this. I’m sorry, I don’t want to be hit with the depression truck-kun two weeks in a row.
