“Pitter patter pitter patter.” – the sound of rain, probably.
Okay, look, I don’t know how else to lead into my thoughts on this episode. It’s just…ah, I don’t know how else to begin! I don’t know if that’s because I don’t own a pet, so I don’t have as many avenues to connect things in the episode to, or if I’m just sleepy. Maybe a mix of both. Who knows.
However, this was still a very entertaining episode overall. It’s still keeping that chill vibe that I expected. And with some of the images we see get taken during the episode, it’s having me keep the idea I threw out last week that the “dog” that Fuji picked up is actually a tanuki. Now, someone who’s actually knowledgeable on Japanese mythology please correct me if I’m incorrect, but it definitely feels like things like yo-kai and how tanukis act in mythology wouldn’t want to be caught on camera, so even when they’re staying still, they’d still find ways to make themselves hard to see by making themselves blurry.
“But if that’s the case, how can people still see these beings in this world?” you may be asking. And to answer that question: …I actually don’t know. Maybe I’ll have an answer for this part of my “Fuji’s ‘dog’ is actually a tanuki from Japanese mythology!” theory next week.
The new characters in this episode were also very fun to see, and I’m interested in seeing if any of them will become main stays in the story. Genuinely Kii and Kinako appear more than just here, as I really enjoyed them in this episode and how they serve as parallels to Fuji and…whatever the name of her little critter is. Dunno if it has a canon one or not, and I’m not about to come up with one only for people who have checked out the source material to tell me “that’s not its name!”, so I guess y’all will have to get used to me calling it things like “the critter” or “the blorbo” instead of having me call it by a name like I refer to the humans (or at the very least, Fuji) by their names.
Sorry, it just feels so weird to call the critter a dog when it clearly isn’t a dog. At least, if the anime I’ve watched have properly shown me what is and is not a dog for anime standards. And based on the standards I have, the critter that hangs around Fuji is not a dog. It’s too smart, and it looks too different too! I’m wearing a detective hat! It’s not a tinfoil hat, I swear!
I know I should probably be focusing on what’s occurring in the episode, but that dang critter is an enigma to me. It seems like it should be a tanuki, but it feels like I shouldn’t say it is one until there’s more evidence to support it. After all, everything I have is just visual evidence. I don’t think I should select a specific species to call it until we have characters who get introduced to it as a dog begin to question it or I see enough evidence that makes me say what it is one way or another, I don’t think it’s my place to pin an identity on it.
