Ruri Rocks Episode 2 – “The Value of Golden Color”

Rocks rock. Ruri rocks. Ruri from Ruri Rocks rocks. Have I properly confused you with my little ramblings up here yet? I’m going to assume that the answer is yes, as I’m pretty certain that the only person who understands why I decided to start this post this way is me. The rest of y’all are probably just like “…okay, Sara”. Might as well get into the review before people ask if I’m okay.

It appears that Ruri managed to get the tools that she wanted from the last episode, and so she’s back out with Nagi to look for minerals. This episode has its focus on minerals be pyrite and gold (though mainly on gold with pyrite coming in due to it being able to be mistaken for gold), and follows the two as they search.

Just like in Episode 1, Nagi is still teaching Ruri more about mineralogy, with that being the perfect framework to insert teaching moments for the members of the audience who want to learn more about it. Because not only is Ruri learning more, we’re learning more.

And with an episode that focuses on minerals that can be easily mistaken for each other when looking at them on the surface, it helps to show why mineralogy is important: finding the little differences in rocks that may not be visible to the naked eye without assistance from tools to be able to better categorize them.

Though when Ruri swam down into the pothole to get some more gold, I’ll be honest, I was nervous. But everything worked out fine (aka she never began drowning), so I guess me being on edge was for naught. But, to be fair, the first simulcast I watched that fell under the “cute girls doing cute things” banner ended up pivoting to being more dramatic instead of just cute girls doing cute things, so I think I’m justified in being more vigilant like this.

That may not be a good feeling to have when watching a cute girls doing cute things show, but it never hurts to be prepared for a show to suddenly become more than what it was advertised to be. Worst case scenario, it doesn’t happen so you prepared for nothing but you still expected it to be cute girls doing cute things so you didn’t lose out on too much. Best case scenario, it follows through, so you were prepared compared to the folks who got blindsided by it.

However, if there’s something that I really rank a “cute girls doing cute things” show on, it’s “how much does this show want me to go out and participate in the activity in the show on my own?”…and yeah, I’d 100% be willing to go out and do this kind of thing if I had both the tools and an area that I knew I’d be able to find stuff like this in, then yeah, I’d be more than willing to go out and safely replicate what I’m seeing here. Unfortunately, I don’t have the tools to do this, and even if I did, I don’t know if there are any areas in walking distance of where I live to be able to to do stuff like this.

Maybe one day I’ll actually go out and do this kind of thing. Until then, however, I’ll be content with watching Ruri and Nagi do it.
