After the…train wreck, for lack of a better term, that was last week’s episode for this series (as well as the writeup I wrote where I saw an excuse to rant), I decided that I’d have to give this series one more episode before I decided whether or not to keep going with the series.
Now, I know what you may be asking. “If you were so put off by something they portrayed in the previous episode, why keep going?” And why, elementary, dear reader: I just wanted to do my reasoning based on the three episode rule.
And…well…
am I the only one getting tired of Dennis saving these guys? Atelier I can understand, since it was a good way to make it clear that Dennis doesn’t support people being forced to work (remember: he told Atelier she can leave at any time!), and it could create a good found family dynamic between the two.
Then Episode 2 happened. I already went on a whole rant last week about how much I disliked what they did in Episode 2. I don’t think it needs repeating here.
And…well…I have good news and bad news.
Good news: This episode was a lot better than Episode 2!
Bad news: I’m still choosing to no longer follow this series as a simulcast. Yes, I know. Shocking words to come from the same person who watched Fluffy Paradise and A Journey Through Another World: Raising Kids While Adventuring in their entirety while they were simulcasting. Hell, I think this is my first ever simulcast that I am purposefully dropping.
Yes, this episode was better than Episode 2. But when my biggest complaint with Episode 2 was how I feel they improperly portrayed a serious subject, my expectations for how good this episode was going to be were low.
While this episode does include some more serious topics, they are portrayed a lot more respectfully than last week…then again, the topic that was covered here is death, which is a lot easier to portray respectfully than stuff like…the topic I complained about in Episode 2. To be honest, I think it’s a shame that Vivia’s in this show. He’s such a cool character, that I’m honestly quite sad that since I’m no longer following this simulcast, I won’t see him again.
But, more importantly, why am I dropping this simulcast?
Simple: based on the first three episodes, it’s not lining up with what I thought it would be…and in a bad way. I had picked up this show thinking it would follow a guy interacting with customers, helping them with their issues, and going into dungeons in disguise to get ingredients. I was expecting it to be more chill and relaxed.
With the whole slavery trade inclusion in Episode 1, I tried to push past it as a way to criticize slavery. Then Episode 2 happened, and that really made me lean towards dropping the series. While I enjoyed this episode, I just couldn’t shake what happened in Episode 2.
Yes, it’s good to remember stuff like SA, regardless of if it was fully successful or not. But if the reason I remembered it was because I didn’t like how it was portrayed, then I think this feeling would only get worse, and while I may be okay watching Dragon Ball GT for something for my channel that’ll come eventually, it’s only because I’m not doing my weekly write ups like this for it, so my complaining will be kept to just one place instead of spread out across 12 to 13 weeks.
And regarding Dennis saving people: I honestly dislike it. I wanted to see some instances of these people saving themselves from beginning to end, but if based on these episodes Dennis has to save them, then I’d rather be watching Dragon Ball GT.
I enjoyed the sampling I got, but I think it’s time I paid my tab and left.
What should I watch instead of Welcome to the Outcast’s Restaurant! if I dropped it and am currently reading this post? (According to Sara):
If you were watching for the “person gets kicked out of party and opens business” part: The Brilliant Healer’s New Life in the Shadows – it’s not a perfect show, and how Zenos began getting patients without really advertising his clinic was kind of weird to me, but I think it did this whole gimmick better than Welcome to the Outcast’s Restaurant!. Plus, there aren’t any SA portrayals. I highly recommend skipping straight to Episode 2 (because for whatever reason, the series started with an anime original first episode) if you choose to check it out. This series is available to stream on Crunchyroll for Premium users.
If you were watching for the food: Food for the Soul – While it is a “cute girls doing cute things” show, I think it did the food parts of it really well. Plus, there aren’t any SA portrayals. Food for the Soul is available to stream on Crunchyroll for Premium users.
