With You and the Rain Episode 3 – “Friends”

This is the kind of feel good show that I like to watch to sort of punctuate my Saturdays during this anime season. Well, if you exclude the movies from the Detective Conan Cinema Saturdays that were being done at the time I was doing these writeups. I’d say exclude them because, by technicality, these would be considered reruns (even though some of the films that we get during this could be films that were never legally released where I live until these Saturdays), and I want to have more of a focus on new releases.

And I found that to be especially true with this episode. It had this very chill vibe and–

Fuji with long hair
Fuji with long hair spotted?!

oh, yeah, we get to see Fuji with long hair! Though, if I’m being honest, I don’t really think that it suits her. So, I guess I’m glad that modern Fuji has short hair instead of long hair. Maybe it’s representative of something, although I don’t know if I know enough about this series within the first three episodes to be able to pin down what exactly this could be representative of. Maybe future episodes will provide flashbacks to show why Fuji changed from long hair to short hair.

The flashback was a great way to introduce Fuji’s friends, especially with the fact that they become important characters in this episode. I don’t have any idea if they’re going to appear in future episodes or not, but I wouldn’t be opposed to seeing them again. And also…

A 'dog' looking up at the camera. Subtitles say 'It looks just like a tanuki.'
I’M NOT CRAZY, I’M NOT CRAZY, I’M NOT CRAZY!

THERE’S A CHARACTER IN THIS SHOW THAT’S ON MY WAVELENGTH WHEN I THINK THAT THE CRITTER IS A TANUKI, BY POINTING OUT THAT THE CRITTER LOOKS LIKE A TANUKI. I KNEW I WAS ON THE RIGHT TRACK BY THINKING IT’S A TANUKI!

No idea why it doesn’t have eyes, but that’ll probably be brought up later. Either that, or it’s just a stylistic choice. Just gotta wait for more episodes to come out to see if more information gets revealed about this silly little critter.

This series is literally so chill, and is the perfect show to just watch if you’re stressed out after a hard day. While the series doesn’t go into any crazy territory, that’s perfect for this series, as it seems to have more of a focus on the characters and how they interact than the story. And that’s perfect for this series. Not every series has to be some huge story-driven masterpiece.

Sometimes, it can just be a girl adopting a “dog” and showing the misadventures that the two get involved in. And as long as things still make sense and don’t become dogshit (or “dog”shit?), then I think this is going to be a great show. And I personally will be sticking with this show throughout this anime season. Because I have the feeling that this show is going to be one of, if not the best anime that I’m watching this season.
