Food for the Soul Episode 4 – “This is Nana Hoshi”

Remember when in my Preliminary Opinion video about this show I made a prediction (in character as one of the characters I utilize on my YouTube channel) about when the fifth member of the club would get introduced in the series. And, well..if you watched this series as it aired (like me!), then you would know that my prediction aged terribly. You’ve read the title, you know what’s gonna happen, let’s do this.

This episode has us learn what one of the classes that Mako takes in university is: German! A prima (great in German) choice, if I do say so myself. (I say, before casually hiding my high school transcript that shows I chose to take SPANISH in my first two years of high school instead of German.) With the lesson wrapping up, Mako is about to exit the classroom, but she runs into another girl who’s also trying to leave, and it gets Mako all nervous. All the girl wants to do is go to the club room for the Food Culture Research Club, for pete’s sake!

But Mako does get into the clubroom, and is just chilling on her own with the fridge that the club now has, when someone enters the clubroom…and it’s the girl from the German class. For Mako, this is not gut (good in German), and she begins thinking the worst. Things get worst when the girl pulls out what Mako jumps to the conclusion of being handcuffs, Mako decides to run away…and runs into Tsutuji.

Thankfully, it turns out that the new girl has no bad intentions. Her name is Nana, and she’s friends with the members of the Food Culture Research Club (minus Mako). Nana also doesn’t do all that great with strangers, so Tsutuji does her best to try and get them to interact. Of course, when this fails, she ends up dancing.

Shinon, meanwhile, has begun working at the restaurant that Kurea’s family owns, and when she struggles with prep, she’s moved to helping customers. And while she doesn’t know the menu as well as Kurea, she does manage to give a suggestion. And she does well, because Shinon’s good with people.

But of course, that means Shinon and Kurea have to walk in on the mess that is what is currently happening in the clubroom. But things end up working out, and a meal gets cooked (with Mako getting permission beforehand!) to welcome Nana into the club with a dish that the standard American (aka me) would refer to as kebab even if they heard it be described as something else. Sorry, it’s just a thing that SOME Americans do.

On a Saturday, Tsutuji arranges for her, Mako, and Nana to be in the club room, which Mako and Nana use to study German. At first they do it on their own, but when Mako is confused, she asks for help, and that’s what causes the two to bond and become friends.

As for Nana herself, I find her story to be interesting. Wanting to start another club but failing and deciding to fall back on her friends is something that I think is realistic. And the fact that she doesn’t like strangers and likes puzzles? To be honest, I think Nana is more “me core” than Mako at this point. Of course, that’s just based on what I know so far. Maybe as the series goes on, I’ll finally figure out which character is most like me. I just know it isn’t Shinon, because she is WAY too social compared to me. My family can confirm that.

But overall, I’m enjoying this series. It is muy (very in Spanish) gut (good in German). …okay, you’re probably getting tired of me throwing in random words from foreign languages in this post. Sorry. This won’t become a habit, just figured I’d do it due to us finding out that Mako takes German. I’ve enjoyed chilling out with this show, and I honestly can’t wait to see what the crew does next. Here’s to the next adventure for the Food Culture Research Club!
