Ruri Rocks Episode 4 – “Study of Sands”

If you’re on Bluesky and you’re reading this as text in a Bluesky post instead of part of a link synopsis, congratulations, Bluesky has finally decided that Ruri Rocks rocks. If you’re literally anywhere else and you’re reading this, you’re not special. So far, I’ve been three for three for needing to post links to the Ruri Rocks posts that I’ve made on my own to Bluesky, and I genuinely don’t want this to become four for four.

…yeah, I currently have a dumb theory that the entire reason that Bluesky refuses to push out these posts on its own is because it believes that Ruri Rocks doesn’t actually rock. I love technical issues. /sarc

Anyway, this was a super cool episode! We got to see the red haired girl in the key art I use follow Ruri during one of the times that Ruri went to collect sand (which confirms, if it wasn’t confirmed already, that Ruri and that girl are both high schoolers), which makes me feel like they’re leading up to having the red haired girl become a main member of the cast in either episode five or six. Maybe this is my redemption for thinking that Nana Hoshi from Food for the Soul would come in at episode six, only for her to hop in to the main cast at episode four? Eh, we’d need to wait for a bit to find that out.

But I also appreciate the lesson that I think I was able to parse from this episode: before you can consider breaking the rules of whatever area you wish to explore, first you need to learn the rules so you know how to break them while still making things work. Be it for the sake of efficiency or creativity regarding your rule breaking, you still need to understand the basics.

I feel like there may be some lessons in the other episodes that other people may have been able to parse easier than me, though I think I was able to parse this lesson so easily not just because we clearly see the lesson being learned by Ruri herself, but because I have interest in areas where learning the rules of the trade (and how to effectively break them), so it was something that I could more easily latch to.

The series still looks as beautiful as ever, and just like before, I still don’t have the words to properly describe why I think this without invoking any fallacies, logical or otherwise. I’m specifically thinking about circular reasoning here, but I really feel like I’d be making “hmm yes the floor here is made of floor” statements, and that wouldn’t be good enough to prove my case.

That’s exactly why I provided y’all with an image last time, that way you guys can figure it out.

But it was fun to see how everything ended up coming together, and seeing how much Ruri seems to have changed at this point! The fact that she’s gone from “I want this jewerly because it has a pretty rock!” to “I want to find the pretty rocks!” is honestly so heartwarming. I can’t wait to see what pretty rocks she’ll find next time!
