Food for the Soul Episode 7 – “I Don’t Think I’ll Ever Forget”

I hate experiencing writer’s block for my little pre-review paragraphs. Yes, I know these aren’t required, but I honestly enjoy writing these, and even if it helps the tiniest bit to help you get prepared for the review, then so be it. Let’s a freaking go into the review.

We open the episode on a flashback to Mako’s elementary school days, where Mako, Shinon, and two of their friends from the time want to buy a parfait…but they only have like 200 yen and four acorns (acorns here thanks to Shinon) between them. Honestly, even if this was a dream that Mako has in-universe, it was still a good way to provide insight into what those days were like, in more so of a “show instead of tell” way. Having the evidence that she actually had a good friend group in elementary school was very nice to see. I forgot if we got any actual flashbacks to those days before this point or not, but it’s nice to finally see that in a solid flashback.

The reason that we see this dream is to prep us for the time that the group heads out for their trip. Mako gets a bento, and while she WANTS to eat it during the train ride, there isn’t enough evidence to suggest whether or not she does. However, the group makes it to an outdoor campsite, where they plan on spending time, with them wanting to make a pizza!

…only one issue, though. When they want to make the pizza, it starts raining. So during the time indoors, the crew decides to talk about their time in high school, to some extent. This is where we learn that whenever Shinon goes on extended trips, she ends up bringing rain along with her…to the point where an event that is usually done indoors had to be done outdoors.

However, this little thing that occurred because rain also ends up with us learning a bit about Kurea: while she has friends apart from the main group, those friends all went to different universities and she doesn’t appear to keep in contact with them anymore. However, since she has the main group, she at the very least still has a support system.

We do get sunshine again, and after a stop at the beach, the group does end up making their pizza! YAY!

This was a fun episode, and it was a nice way to showcase the trip over the summer. I don’t know whether this’ll last into the next episode or not (I learned my lesson from Stardust Telepath), but if we do get to see more of them on the trip, then that’ll be nice. To be honest, I love how despite starting this club as a front to slack off, we actually see them doing club activities so well.

Maybe Shinon and Tsutuji were actually foodies this whole time, and we never knew. (Didn’t include Kurea because we already know she works at her family’s restaurant). Or maybe Nana joining the club was what finally whipped them into taking this seriously. But honestly, I’m surprised that the clerk hasn’t come to check in on them more often. Maybe she’s always standing just out of frame, close enough to observe them and ensure that they’re doing their duties, without us or them noticing them.

…maybe I’m thinking too much about this. Either way, I can’t wait to check back in with this show next week!
