Food for the Soul Episode 8 – “The Air Conditioner Is…Broken?”

Ah, summer. The time of year when the heat gets to be more oppressive than Dr. Eggman’s father. (Mom, if you’re reading this, then I do NOT expect you to understand that last sentence. It is a reference to something, though.) Yes, we’ve been in summer for quite a while at this point, and this is going up as we’re getting closer to the tail-end of summer (though it’s still a bit of a ways off), but my comment still stands. I hope you have your ACs (or box fans) and ice water (or Gatorade) ready, because now’s the perfect time to beat the heat! And how am I gonna do that? WATCHING ANIME! Anyway, lemme get into the review.

For this, I’ll be splitting my review into two parts, as I believe there are two unconnected stories that are in this episode, and I just like making it clear when I’m switching topics. I think that makes it better for everyone! I will note that the division names I’m using are NOT official names, and are only what makes me remember what part of the episode I’m talking about.

Part 1: Nana’s Pet

Shinon wanted to get the group together to go out, but Nana had to turn it down because her pet, named Pochi, had an appointment the day the group was wanting to hang out. Mako herself ends up under the impression that the pet is a dog, and even sends a dog sticker. Of course, earlier, it was revealed that Pochi is actually a chameleon. Or, at the very least, LOOKS like a chameleon.

Nana feeds Pochi before going to bed…but forgets to latch the door, giving Pochi the perfect opportunity to escape during the night. Which means in the morning, Nana has to search for her pet. And she finds it…near a family member of hers who is both a) wearing butterfly earrings and b) scared of Pochi. Nana TRIES to get her family member to not move, but this ends up failing, causing Pochi to lick the earring and the family member to scream. Well, at least Nana has her pet now!

And Nana also talked about what happened to Mako…who is still under the impression that Pochi is a dog. Please never change, Mako.

Overall, this was a fun story, and a nice way to ease into the episode. …though I’m probably only saying that because earlier on the day I’m writing this, I had watched an episode that made me feel physically uncomfortable. Not in the “oh, that’s illegal” way, in the “oh, this could end up as an image of one of my favorite characters that wouldn’t be safe for work due to blood that extends past a papercut” way, so I needed something that was very much on the lighter side…which I would’ve gotten regardless with this series. But I WOULD watch this part of the episode again if I needed that kind of comfort.

Part 2: Oh No! Our AC! It’s Broken!

It’s a hot day, and the Food Culture Research Club decides to meet indoors, and try to turn on the AC…only to find that it’s not turning on. Mako does have a pocket fan…but some of the other girls try to hog the air alongside her, with the crew ending up going outside again.

This is where we meet Sakura, a member of the Agricultural Club at the university…and Shinon had promised to help out the club in return for letting the Food Culture Research Club use the refrigerator that used to belong to the Agricultural Club. This ends up in the entire Food Culture Research Club helping out in the fields, which Nana is good at. As a thank you for helping out, the Food Culture Research Club even gets to take some of the produce with them. And the answer for what to do with it? COOK, of course! And theme it after a festival! And get yukatas from the Japanese Fashion Club, in exchange for a mannequin in the room!

I’m not going to spoil how this story wrapped up since I think it’s funnier when you go into it blind, but at the very least, it should be operational again next episode…even if we’re no longer in summer by then.

Just like the previous story, this one was fun, and I think was more fun than the previous one in this episode. Honestly, seeing the girls do something with food that ISN’T eating or cooking was actually rather fun for a change. Honestly, I hope that we see them do more farming stuff, either with or without Sakura.

Honestly, I love this show. It takes the most mundane issues and transforms them into the most insane adventures, always with food involved in one way or another. This is probably going to go down as my comfort show, and also the comfort show of all time for me. It gives me the warm fuzzies, and I love sitting down to watch it every week. The show’s really grown on me, and I genuinely can’t wait to see where it goes next week!
