With You and the Rain Episode 9 – “A Secret”

Ah yes, another episode of the anime where if someone with my review style writes about it, the main joke of the series probably wears down quicker than it does in the series itself, so each review is a fight with myself to not constantly talk about the big joke of the series so that the joke doesn’t wear down as much.

This is an episode that explores something that I honestly didn’t expect: Fuji wanting to keep her author duties a secret from those who don’t already know that she’s an author. Maybe it’s because I’ve always been pretty proud of being an author, but that really isn’t something I can relate to when I reflect upon myself. Now, that’s not a bad thing. Maybe there are people out there that can relate to that. I’m just not one of them.

And, of course, the critter has to be cute, as always.

If I ever decide to tell you “I’m eating your work”, this is what I mean.

Never experienced anything like this myself, but I bet some critters get way too curious about physical manuscripts and decide to just now at it when that work isn’t properly protected. This is also now what I’m gonna imagine whenever I see comments online that say that they’ve eaten someone’s work: still having enough out for others to see, but having just enough in their mouth to classify as eating.

While I usually find myself watching this episode in relative quiet regarding my reactions, there was one scene that did cause me to laugh a bit. Fuji was at a vending machine trying to get something, only to drop her coin. The critter catches it, however, during the process of Fuji recovering the coin from the critter, the critter moves, causing the coin to fall from its head to below the vending machine. Yes, I will admit that this made me laugh, as this could be done IRL to similar effect. Somehow, it being the critter that did this actually makes it funnier.

Honestly, I love the shows that take a premise idea (example that’s literally just this series: “what if creature from mythology was real but everyone mistook it for another creature from real life?”), and then just rolls with it by coming up with plot ideas for little stories that form a longer story when watched back to back, but can still succeed as standalone stories if necessary. Would I still say that you should watch the first episode just to understand the context as to why this series is even able to occur? Yup. But I absolutely would not blame you for jumping in during the middle of the series, as the series still works that way.
