Ah yes, the anime about rocks and two pairs of people at two different schools learning more about those rocks to try and convince people to also learn about rocks. A show that’s on the chill side compared to the more action oriented shows that you more commonly see people recommend to new anime viewers. And a chill show is just what’s needed in uncertain times like the ones we have now, considering everything that’s been coming out in the news and all.
And honestly? Not finding opals in an area where there were whispers of there being opals is like being promised that the country you live in is the “land of the free” yet each day that passes by feels more and more like the government is trying to clamp its grubby hands all over you to control your every thought and action until you’re just a puppet that spreads their bullshit.
…oh my god, when did the wind get so loud?
Anyway, another episode that contains edutainment sections about something man-made that has impacts on mineralogy. Because everything seems to impact the work of mineralogists. Then again, everything seems to impact everything else, so I guess I shouldn’t be so surprised by this.
And, honestly, that’s not bad. A good chunk of the series was spent teaching the basics of rocks and the pros of doing mineralogy. But seeing how they portray man-made stuff and how those ultimately can hold people back in mineralogy is a breath of fresh air: it means that they’re willing to recognize that the cute thing they’re having the girls do isn’t completely easy.
That’s something I can completely respect this show for doing. It’s nice to see a show like this acknowledge that the work isn’t all easy and that newer people in it are bound to make mistakes than showing minimal difficulties. Specifically, difficulties that are outside of the control of the people working on it. It’s like being late because you took a wrong turn versus being late because an accident occurred later on in your path while you’re still earlier in your path and it seemed like the path was going to be fully clear. Both can be sources of conflict for shows, though shows that try to get people into a hobby or an area of study tend to avoid the second one.
And there’s an understandable reason for that: what if people don’t get into it because it’s too difficult? But the truth is, nothing good comes easily. It takes a lot of time, effort, and struggle to get the kind of results that people see as cool. This is true in many areas of study: art, music, writing, as clear examples, but also science. We wouldn’t have the scientific method otherwise.
I still believe that this is a great series, and I genuinely hope that once this anime season is done, more people check it out. This is genuinely such a cool show, and even if it doesn’t get a lot of attention now, I hope it does later.
