Home. A simple word that many people probably already know well. A lot of people also have a place they can connect to that simple word. And sometimes, it’s good to return to your roots. Unless your roots were harmful to you. Then, yeah, it’s good to stay away from them. Anyway, it’s time for me to discuss Food for the Soul.
The episode begins with the crew in the club room, having finished their finals for…whatever quarter they were in, and they’re discussing where they’re going to go for their break. While the other girls want to go on a trip, Mako says that her parents wanted her to visit home when she had a longer break. So, what better way to allow both to happen than by taking the club on a trip to Mako and Shinon’s home town? They even decide to stay near Mako’s parents: since Mako’s grandma lives with her parents now, that leaves Mako’s grandma’s house free for the girls to utilize.
But, unfortunately, the way there involves driving a lot on the freeway…and Shinon can’t handle freeways, as previously established. Which means, for a good chunk of the drive, Kurea has to be the one behind the wheel. Honestly, I feel bad for Kurea. Can we please have Shinon do something to have her be less afraid of driving on freeways? PLEASE?
Anyway, they eventually make it to where they’re going to stay, and while Kurea rests, Nana and Tsutuji get to work at lighting a fire to boil water in the traditional way due to the house of Mako’s grandma being more of a traditional house. Meanwhile, Mako and Shinon meet up with their old friends at the place they wanted to eat at that one time when they all hung out together.
And then, the whole Food Culture Research Club joins up back together at Mako’s grandma’s place to cook something. Yippie! 😀
Due to this writeup coming out AFTER the anime season this series simulcast, I think it’d be fun to point out that the day this episode was added to Crunchyroll was actually the Saturday of the finals week at the university I used to attend. Is that just pure coincidence? Most likely, yes. But was it still nice to hear the characters state that they were done with finals while I was also done with finals? Also, yes.
I also loved the interactions between the girls in this episode…then again, I could the same about their interactions in ANY of the episodes so far. These girls are just friend group goals, and I am all for it.
Honestly, I’ve been enjoying how chill and laid back this show is in comparison to other anime I’ve watched, and I find that to be really cool. Honestly, it’s nice to have a series where the main conflicts are just average every day stuff that everyone can deal with and how these characters deal with it, and not “the world is on the verge of destruction and the only people who can save it are these random ass high school students who should be studying instead of playing hero”.
But only two more weeks of this show…aah! I don’t want it to end! Also, apologies for this review being shorter, but I’m trying to experiment with my writing style to see what I DO like, what I DON’T like, and see how well those go over with you guys. I’m doing more of that in my other writeups, but I figured I should at least try to do so here as well. But I WILL finish this series. I swear my life on this.
