With You and the Rain Episode 10 – “A River That Cannot Be Crossed”

Fuji’s writers block is so severe, it seems like the remaining episodes will be an arc detailing how Fuji deals with her writer’s block…as if the other episodes haven’t been evidence of it. Then again, the last episode was more “Fuji wants to keep the fact that she’s an author a secret from the people she knows” instead of Fuji actually dealing with writers block.

And that’s fine. Writers block can suddenly reappear after you think you’ve defeated it (even if, to my knowledge, Fuji didn’t beat her writers block the first time), and sometimes you’ve got to let the writers block naturally pass instead of trying to force a solution on the spot. There’s nothing wrong with either letting your writers block pass regularly or trying to figure out a solution on your own.

There’s one moment that made me genuinely laugh at the end of this episode. Fuji and the critter are walking near an area with water, with the two getting closer to it. Fuji tells the critter not to drink the water…only for the critter to immediately drink the water. Should this have made me laugh? I dunno! Did I laugh anyway? Yup!

As someone who does some creative writing in my free time (even if the majority of it is just fan fiction) and who wants to publish my original stories one day, I can find Fuji to be a character that I can relate to. While I may not be as far on the path as her, it sometimes feels like I’m following the same path.

Though it felt like the bit with Ren, despite it being the main thing being highlighted in the synopsis done by Crunchyroll, was moreso done to fill time instead of to move the self-contained story of the episode along. Maybe it was because I was uncomfortable with something that they were seemingly portraying as a “joke”, or maybe that part of the episode didn’t click as well with me.

Like, I think the point would’ve gotten across a lot better with Ren visiting Fuji, and Fuji asking what Ren would do in her situation, for Ren to provide the answer. The rest of it felt to me like unnecessary timekill. Though the critter landing on Chile is interesting. Maybe there’s explanations for it in other cultures?

Or maybe I’m thinking too deep into that decision and it was just something random that the author of the source material decided to do. Who knows.

But I’m still enjoying this show, and I’m excited to see what will happen in the remaining two episodes!
