A Mangaka’s Weirdly Wonderful Workplace Episode 2 – “She’s a Truly Dependable Assistant”

Sorry if this post ends up being shorter than my typical posts here. I’m on more of a crunch to write this due to the fact that for a while, Crunchyroll didn’t have proper English subtitles available for this episode. Like, there were subtitles for some of the on-screen stuff that’s not as important, but the dialogue hadn’t been subtitled yet. And I thought they worked out whatever internal issues they had with subtitling! :/

However, the basis of this episode appears to be to explore Mizuki as more of a character, as well as to provide more development for Futami. I feel like this was a good way to make these two feel like they have more substance behind their characters and like they have motivation behind what they do. I feel like the characters needed to have a bit more development, and while I feel like the episode from this week was more development based than comedy based, but I think it’s important that the characters feel like…well…characters. Not to say that it’s a bad thing, but I feel like I’d be more interested in the characters if I was able to more easily connect with them.

While I was already connecting with Futami, it was because I could latch onto personality traits of hers because I could see them in myself. But for the others, I feel like I need to see more of them as characters before I can fully understand why I should follow these guys and their stories. While they don’t have to be fully developed, they at least need to feel like I could run into them in the real world.

While I did find myself giving some short chuckles, I wouldn’t say that the comedy in this episode was all that strong. Which is understandable, since I pointed out that this episode seemed to be more development focused than comedy focused. However, that means I don’t really have any good way to judge the comedy at this point in the series. Maybe I just need another episode to judge that. But based on the title for next week’s episode, it should be more of a comedy focused episode than a development focused episode, so I hope to get some good chuckles out next week!
