A Mangaka’s Weirdly Wonderful Workplace Episode 3 – “I’m So Swamped, I’d Even Take Help from a Cat”

I would’ve watched this yesterday, but with non-emergency family stuff that occurred that day where I wasn’t told when we were going to head out until basically the day before (with me feeling like the time would’ve caused the quality of this writeup to suffer in the process), I had to quickly do stuff to make it clear this post was going to be delayed. Thankfully, this should be the only week where I need to do a delay on writeups. All the other writeups should come out at regular time. Many apologies about the delay for this writeup, and it’s time that I actually cover it.

This episode follows Futami getting so swamped that she requires help from another assistant, so Sato sets her up with an assistant that does all their work virtually, which Futami and Mizuki didn’t know that could even be done. Funnily enough, Futami says the exact episode title in her dialogue (at least on the Crunchyroll simulcast), and the help she gets comes in the form of someone with the username of Nekonote. I actually found this rather funny, and if you know Japanese, you’d understand why. And if you don’t? That’s easy enough for you to look up yourself.

I will admit, I found myself letting out little laughs throughout this episode. While this might not be the exact kind of humor that I usually find myself laughing at, it seems to be growing on me. And you know what? I think that’s good enough for me. I’m willing to continue watching this series if it means that I can give this show more opportunities to have its humor grow on me. After all, if I’ve been feeling myself thinking that this is funny, then surely that’s a good sign, right?

I’ve also been enjoying the characters, as I think that all of them are well written so far. I’m extremely interested in seeing where the story ends up going from this point forward. It seems like the work towards making a manga happen is what’s ultimately pushing the story forward, and I like how this show gives me the same kinds of vibes as I got when watching SHIRABAKO. That, ultimately, is the most fun part of the series for me: watching as a character does their job and getting something for people to enjoy made.

Maybe at the end of the day, A Mangaka’s Weirdly Wonderful Workplace isn’t about coming out with an end product. It’s about the connections made through work, and how one person can’t handle every little task on their own and how it’s okay to ask for help. Then again, we’re only three episodes in, so there’s the chance that this is just the kind of theme I’ve noticed across the first three episodes. Regardless, I’m excited to see what Futami and the gang get up to next!
