Wash It All Away Episode 2 – “We’re Proud of Our Natural Hot Spring”

Oh boy. Where do I begin? I know I didn’t really go into details in my writeup for Episode 1, but that’s because I didn’t know whether a thread that was there would get expanded upon straightaway (as in during this week’s episode) or not. For all I know, I could’ve brought it up then and then would’ve been forced to wait eleven weeks just to be able to tell you guys more about it. Honestly, I’m glad that we got the continuation of that plot thread now.

Anyway, in the previous episode, when dealing with that customer that I initially thought was going to be mean to Kinme, Kinme thanks them for supporting her over the past two years. However, there’s a specific line of dialogue (or at least an approximation of it) that I feel the need to bring up that (if I remember correctly) was given during this conversation.

“Cleaning was the one thing I didn’t forget.”

This could mean one of two things for Kinme:

  1. Kinme Wakana is Kinme’s real name, but she forgot it during whatever event caused her to forget basically everything else about herself, though someone managed to tell her that’s her name and she believed them.
  2. Kinme Wakana is not Kinme’s real name, and her actual name was forgotten alongside everything except for cleaning.

Honestly, it’ll be interesting to see which of these threads Wash It All Away decides to pursue. Though the title now has a bit of a double meaning. Yes, we’re washing away the stains on the clothes, but Kinme’s memories have been washed away as well.

But with the amount that she’s forgotten (being everything except cleaning and maybe her name), it makes me think that she experienced something so traumatic that her brain determined that the only way to deal with it was to basically do a clean install, leaving behind only the cleaning knowledge. At the very least, we know that she doesn’t remember if she has a family.

Regardless, you’ve got to feel a bit bad for Kinme. She’s helping wash items to ensure that they continue to carry on the memories of the people who own them, but her memories only go back to the past two years.

Though if there’s one character that I have conflicted feelings on (just like Kinme had about them in this episode!), then it has to be Nairo. On the one hand, she’s an adorable little girl! On the other, some of the things she does are questionable to me at best. At the very least, she doesn’t seem bad.

I’m also proud to say that the episode name (or at least a variant of it) got said twice (that I can explicitly remember) in the episode. I love when shows do that, regardless of if it’s on an episode name level or a series name level.

I genuinely want to know what the deal with Kinme’s memory is. That may be the one thing that keeps me watching this series.
