Meitantei Precure Episode 4 – “Exciting! Our First Client!”

Meitantei Precure casually being one of three shows that I follow this season as and do the writeups where (as of last week) I don’t have to pull the episode title out of my ass. I wonder what the one where I have to make up episode titles is. Anyway, time to talk about the episode.

The episode begins with Anna, Mikuru, Jett, and Pochitan in the detective agency. It’s slow at first…until someone comes in with a case! And…it’s technically not a missing item case! Okay, so it still kinda is, but it’s not the “i can’t find my [blank], it’s gone!” kind, it’s the “[blank] seemingly turned into [blank]!” kind. But since Anna and Mikuru are ready for their first official case, they take it!

Meanwhile, the Phantom Thieves’ Guild is also getting into action. This is the episode where we first see Goemon go into action, as well as (I believe) the first episode where Cure Arcana Shadow has her name dropped. Do not quote me on that last part, however. I could be wrong. It’s also interesting to know that these guys gets hints for what the object is.

And, due to Anna and Mikuru running into Goemon during their search (more like he came to them, but po-tay-to poh-tah-to), this was an episode that didn’t rely on “the culprit was actually a phantom thief in disguise!”…though I stand by the fact that out of all of the villains we’ve gotten to see in action, Nijee is the strongest one character-wise. I don’t know, maybe it’s because he reminds me of another phantom thief character I enjoy.

To make a long story short, they figure out who the bag they had belongs to, and swap it for the actual bag…only for that bag to be taken from them and turned into a Hanninda. And…oh yeah, this guy is also flower themed. Is Ageseine literally just a mix between Nijee and Goemon? Smh, there’s unoriginality in the ranks.

This episode also had Cure Answer and Cure Mystique using their solo powers for the first time. Normally, I wouldn’t be too upset at seeing this. But considering we’ve seen no struggle of them using these before now, it doesn’t feel like these solo powers were earned. I can excuse them already knowing how to use their duo power in episode 1 because there’d be no other way to have the series forward, but realistically, I feel like we should’ve seen them struggle with their solo powers before now. Hell, based on the preview and a synopsis that I read online based on likely a different version of the preview, next episode would’ve been the perfect time to introduce their solo powers instead of just having them use them here with seemingly no buildup to having them.

And yes, another PreKit gadget is introduced that involves drawing, but it was already established that Mikuru isn’t the best at drawing (hence why a drawing she made with this gadget was mistaken for something else) by an earlier scene, so you could say there was some buildup there. But I cannot see where the buildup to these two using powers on their own is.

“Oh, but they’re detectives! They likely figured it out on their own!”

So how’d they know how to use their solo powers but not how to transform, especially with the implication that the previous Meitantei PreCure has been away for a while? After all, if the current fights are anything to go off of, these fights aren’t exactly watched by the public.

There is a sweet ending to this story after the Hanninda gets defeated, however, though I’m going to leave that for you to figure out. I just…I think I’m getting too worked up over a kids’ show. Aye caramba.

Overall, this was a fun episode. I genuinely can’t wait to see next week. It’ll be the first episode where we could see infighting among Anna and Mikuru! It’s honestly a great way to show that even people who seem to be great friends still fight sometimes!
