Meitantei Precure Episode 5 – “Star Detectives In Trouble?!”

Yeah, I love being creative with my episode titles when there’s a visible discrepancy between the Japanese title and the title in the subtitles, so I find a way to have both be there if at all possible! I’m so cool! And now, to talk about the episode.

This episode marks Mikuru’s first day back at school, starting her next school year. At first, she’s concerned that Anna’s going to be lonely, but Anna’s like “no, no, I’ll be okay!”, even with Jett in his lab. After Mikuru heads out, however, Anna notices that she didn’t take an umbrella, and after getting a new charm from Jett (with one for Mikuru), Anna heads out to get the umbrella to Mikuru…only to see Mikuru interacting with her school friends.

Anna turns around, feeling sad…when she runs into a person! She’s a university student whose sister is currently away in London for an exchange program, and is trying to figure out why people are reporting that sister being in Japan, with Anna accepting the case without consulting Mikuru because Mikuru’s at school.

Meanwhile, Mikuru is asked to talk to the Headmaster due to her moving out to start a detective agency, and gives Mikuru a case to investigate regarding ghosts…which Mikuru is afraid of.

Oh, yeah, there’s also a scene where the boss of the Phantom Thieves Guild has Nijee (aka best bad guy) be assigned to go out and search for a Makoto Jewel, basically saying (if I’m understanding correctly) that this is one of, if not the last chance that Nijee has. Genuinely hope that he doesn’t disappear after this whole little case (because, uh, spoiler: it doesn’t get wrapped up in this episode) is wrapped up. Nijee is the best villain in this series, I swear.

Back to the girls, Anna and Mikuru do their own investigations (with Anna utilizing Pre-Kit Gloss to make herself look like a student for her investigation), and while they don’t get far alone, they eventually regroup (even if Mikuru gets spooked first), and cover their cases, with them getting upset at the lack of communication.

This is technically a spoiler for the episode, but whatever, I don’t think there’s any way I can explain this without spoiling a bit of the episode, but the girls’ cases actually intersect, and the subject of those cases is actually Nijee in disguise. He summons a Hanninda, the girls transform, and a fight occurs.

Except it’s not as straight forward as a typical fight. And it’s exactly what I wanted to see last episode when it came to Anna and Mikuru struggling with their powers. They bonk into each other, their usual move doesn’t take down the Hanninda, and the only option they have left is the new thing of Jett’s. Anna tries doing the usual thing to make the charm turn into an object…but it doesn’t work.

Thankfully, Anna and Mikuru don’t die because Pochitan came in and protected the two, though using up a lot of its energy in the process and letting Nijee get away. Meaning that we need next episode to find out how this case wraps up.

And oh my goodness, this episode has been so fun so far! I love how we’re seeing the girls fight amongst themselves to show that they aren’t just like “We get along all the time!”, and this episode actually reminded me of Futari wa Precure Episode 8 in that regard. I know that Anna and Mikuru will likely reconcile by the end of Episode 6, but seeing how they have these fights really helps to humanize them.

I’m really excited to see where Meitantei Precure goes from here!
