Dead Account Episode 12 – “The Hot Springs Town After the Thaw”

There’s really not much to talk about when it comes to the events of this episode. The bad guy of the arc gets defeated with ✨the power of friendship✨, aftermath that involves them resting up in a safe area, and based on the ending, it seems to be one of those “and life goes on” endings, making it seem like we’re not going to get a second season. Or if we do, then by the time it gets announced, I’ll have forgotten all about this series by then. If I had to compare my feelings about this series to any other series I’ve watched, it’s on a similar level to Wash it All Away. It had a strong start but an ending that I personally felt unsatisfied with, though I think my dissatisfaction here came from the fact that watching through the A-B battle arc was a genuine chore for me.

Genuinely, I was drawn to this series because of beating up ghosts that come out of phones, as well as the fact that the reason Soji’s story got started because of what happened to his sister. However, as the series progressed, this series went from “I have to see what happens next!” to “Oh, this series is airing another episode, okay”. I think that at the time my interest began waning, I felt like I was too far in to just drop it without leaving so many questions unanswered.

Like, if I had to put final episodes of series that I’ve watched and enjoyed from the start in simulcast form on a tier list, Quality Assurance in Another World would be F tier (just to give you guys a baseline for what I consider F), with Dead Account and Wash It All Away put in C tier (good in terms of an ending, but unsatisfying for me), and all the way up in S tier is Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again. I could list others here, but these were the big names that popped into my head with how their endings impacted me.

It’s just…unlike Wash It All Away, where I could at least complain about the plot threads that were left unresolved, I can’t find anything all that big to talk about in terms of Dead Account that (as far as I can tell) I haven’t brought up already.

Would I watch a second season if one comes out? Only if I’m struggling to find anything else in that anime season that I’m interested in. Would I go back and rewatch this series? Maybe if I’m feeling nostalgic, but I’m in no rush to right now. Would I be quick to recommend this series? Not particularly. All in all, this felt like an average show. Not so bad that I’ll be treating it as a horror for years to come, not so good that I use it as an example of what to do. And that’s okay. Sometimes you need to pick the average just to remind you how good the great is.
