Always a Catch! Episode 1 – “How I Searched For A Promising Catch”

Always a Catch! was one of the few shows where I decided to watch a trailer for it prior to watching the first episode. Hell, I watched two trailers before the first episode dropped. And the only reason I knew these trailers existed was because the international TMS YouTube channel (Anime! on TMS Official Channel) posted the English subtitled trailers, which made me positive that this series was going to get released in America. So glad to find out that I was right, even if I didn’t find out until the literal day the simulcast went live. Ah well, I can’t be too mad.

Anyway, Episode 1 does a great job of establishing the premise that the trailers set up: The protagonist, Mimi, travels to the kingdom of Rubini to study abroad and also look for a guy to marry due to her parents now having a son that they can have serve as an heir to the family. And Mimi has a goal with her studying abroad: getting a husband!

We get introduced to characters that seem like will be important as the series goes on (Mimi’s friend Aida, the brothers Renato and Placido, and rival lady Eleonora) during the episode as well, and I’m curious to see how they all develop over the course of the series.

I also love how Always a Catch! did good at showing that Mimi is strong instead of outright telling us that. In a flashback in the episode, we see Mimi training with what I assume to be soldiers of the kingdom. While that in and of itself isn’t enough to show how strong Mimi is, a scene later in the episode where she accidentally hits Eleonora in the face, causing a comedic fly off in the visuals (and even movements and comments made after Eleonora got up) do a good job of showing that Mimi has this strength.

And then comes the thing that drew me to the series: Mimi getting broken up from an engagement that she never had! As that’s the part that was most heavily marketed by TMS.

You see, Aida was engaged to Renato. After Mimi hit Eleonora, however, she was getting accompanied by Renato during the graduation party, and when both Aida and Mimi were watching (and Renato knew they were watching), Renato grabs Mimi and calls off his engagement with Aida when speaking to Mimi, seemingly framing Mimi’s actions as something Aida did when it was Mimi who did it.

Now, despite me learning about this series from TMS’s international YouTube channel, calling this a series made by TMS is kind of a misnomer in my eyes. According to the Wikipedia page for this series (which I’m only using as a source because it’s the first place I can think of that mentions it), TMS is only responsible for the production and the planning for the series. Troyca is the studio responsible for the animation, and I believe their animation is a perfect pairing with this series. It’s more accurate to say that this is a TMS and Troyca collaboration.

But I’m honestly super excited to see where this series goes from here! May Mimi find her promising catch.
