Meitantei Precure Episode 2 – “Introducing the Genius, Jett-senpai!”

It felt so weird to watch this week’s Meitantei Precure episode without having watched an episode of another series that also features detectives prior to it. And unless some thing that’s alleged turn out to be wrong, that’s actually going to be the case for the entirety of February, so…whoops? At least I have one meitantei series to keep me company on Saturdays somewhat consistently. Anyway, time for me to talk about the episode!

The episode begins with Anna taking Mikuru to the place where her residence should be…but because the year is 1999, that place is currently a construction zone! Realizing both that Anna is not a Star Detective Precure from the CUREtto Detective Agency, and that Anna has no place to stay in 1999, Mikuru decides that the best option is to take Anna to the CUREtto Detective Agency.

At first, the place seems abandoned, but as they wander, they run into a boy, who doesn’t believe them when they say they’re Star Detective Precure. This is Jett (the -senpai honorific comes later), and he’s an inventor. We actually get to see some of his inventions at work in this episode, but to be honest, I don’t think anything’s going to top a bow tie that changes how your voice sounds when you speak into it.

Mikuru wants to prove to Jett that she and Anna are Star Detective Precure…but the clock strikes five, and Mikuru’s like “well, it’s curfew time, I’m going back to school. Also, you better let Anna stay the night”, which Jett does.

That segment is also where we learn more about Pochitan: Pochitan is a fairy of space and time, and it used up all of its energy to send Anna from 2027 to 1999. This episode also shows up that Pochitan needs to absorb the Makoto Jewels to get back to its original form and use its powers to slip Anna back to 2027. This gives a perfect explanation as to why Anna just can’t go back right after that first Hanninda. Pochitan needs to save up more energy!

The next day, Mikuru’s ready to prove to Jett that she and Anna are Star Detective Precure…only for Pochitan to do the dragging thing it did with Anna last episode, this time with Pochitan dragging Anna to a cake cafe, where we get…you guessed it, yet another case about a missing item. Which makes sense, the villains are phantom thieves.

While this case started off a lot simpler (the one person who talked to the victim was the culprit), they made it a bit more difficult by having the thief change their disguise, and needing the girls to figure out who the phantom thief changed their disguise to. However, if you watched the episode and paid attention, there was likely a detail from back when the case was just as simple as a stolen pen that made you realize “wait a minute, if that’s true, then that person can’t be doing that!” …that’s literally as vague as I can get without giving you guys spoilers for the episode.

However, for Anna and Mikuru to interact while Anna decides to go off looking for the suspect, Jett gives them both a device that they can use to communicate with each other…that looks kinda big and is literally shaped like him in fairy form. If he was trying to make the device look subtle, a badge like one that you pin on your clothes would’ve been more subtle than that.

Anyways, Nijee reveals himself from his disguise yet again, and makes a Hanninda from the stolen pen. This is also where we learn the goal of the Phantom Thieves’ Guild: to cover the world with lies. Makes sense, because detectives search for the one truth, and the only way to counter the one truth is to lie.

Then, as typical, the girls get their energy together, beat up the Hanninda, and once they get the Makoto Jewel, they give it to Pochitan. This fight is ultimately what convinces Jett that these two are Meitantei Precure, and he gives them the PreKit Book (with a PreKit Pen to go with it) and has them sign to officially register them as Star Detective Precure. A conversation after this is also where the name “Jett-senpai” officially comes into play.

Personally, I really enjoy Jett as a character. He came from the London CUREtto Detective Agency (meaning that there’s more of those than just the one in Japan!), and being from the London one is such a cool detail, because Sherlock Holmes was a detective from London, which ties into the detective theme of the show.

Then again, we’re talking about famous detective Sherlock Holmes. I bet you already knew what I was saying because of course everyone knows famous detective Sherlock Holmes.

This was a fun episode to pass the time. Genuinely hope we get to see Jett take more of a starring role in future episodes. He’s a fun character, and I’d love to see him, as well as the girls, go further from here! 😀
