Kaya-chan Isn’t Scary Episode 6 – “Shopping Malls Aren’t Scary/The Punishment Room Isn’t Scary?”

At the time that I watched this episode, Crunchyroll had its episode title listed as “Episode 06”. Thankfully, since this series has subtitles for the titles of the segments, however, I’m able to provide the official title for this episode. Just like last episode, this episode is only comprised of two segments. Unlike last episode, however, these segments are not connected to each other, meaning I’m able to justify having the dividers. So, let’s get into what the episode is about.

Shopping Malls Aren’t Scary

This section begins with the children in the kindergarten making drawings of an event that they remembered occurred during the field trip. While Kaya draws a scene that involved her beating up a ghost (which another student assumes to be made up), only for Chie to make an explanation that the tree looked like a ghost, to allow Kaya to keep her drawing the way it is.

Later, Mob watching Kaya as she plays a crane game and wins a plushie. He’s about to leave when he notices Kaya on her own. He follows after her, to find out that Kaya has lost her dad…and her plushie too, it appears.

Though an interesting note is that when Mob finds Kaya, the mall goes from being somewhat packed to empty with the exception of seemingly Kaya and Mob. However, it seems like Kaya found her dad in a store, with Mob following her.

The store has a lot of mannequins, which all turn out to be haunted by spirits, made especially clear when someone that seemed to be signaling to Mob and Kaya turned out to be just a mannequin arm.

Mob takes Kaya to the elevator, intending to go back to the ground floor to allow Kaya to go home…only for the elevator to not function. And as it turns out, the “Kaya” with Mob isn’t actually Kaya!

The real Kaya does end up helping Mob, however, and everything basically turns out alright. While new characters are getting set up (like a character that was hinted to in the previous episode) because of this episode, I think that next episode will see more of those fall into place. Though, I’d prefer to move into talking about the next segment.

The Punishment Room Isn’t Scary?

The section begins with one of the other students breaking an object, and gets put in the punishment room. One of Kaya’s classmates had explained the punishment room, and even brought Kaya to the room that is supposedly the punishment room.

However, as it turns out, there’s a ghost in here that is only visible to those who can see spirits when the lights are off. While Kaya’s classmate is terrified because of Kaya turning the light on and off, Kaya beats up the ghost.

There’s also a scene where Chie talks to Kaya and her classmate to figure out what happened due to Kaya’s classmate coming out crying, and also involves Kaya herself crying. I genuinely felt so bad for Kaya when I saw her crying, it’s like “noo, my girl’s sad! </3”.

The idea of a spirit only appearing in the dark is also an interesting concept. I’d love to see more spirits with gimmicks like this.

Overall, this episode was fun. I hope that the series keeps being a fun little series I can keep checking in on week after week.
