Kaya-chan Isn’t Scary Episode 10 – “Hide-and-Seek Isn’t Scary/Cameras Aren’t Scary/Aunt Nana Isn’t Scary?”

Okay, this was surely an episode. You determine whether that’s meant to be good or bad. I can’t really think of anything to lead into the post naturally, so I guess I’ll just get into it.

Hide-and-Seek Isn’t Scary

This begins with a conversation between Namu and Chie. It provides some information, like how at the moment, Namu is currently staying with Mob. It also provides information regarding the family. Chie also talks to Nana again due to her coming to pick up Kaya, though Chie doesn’t press about Kaya’s oddities yet.

We see Kaya starting to lose faith in her own skills for facing specters, and she talks to Nana about it, who makes her a talisman. Kaya’s like “hehe butt” with the talisman, causing Nana to remember when something similar happened with her little sister (Kaya’s mom, named Mirai), with both situations resulting in different endings – Past Mirai was like “just kidding”, while Kaya apologized for calling it a butt.

At school, Kaya and some of her friends decide to play hide and seek, with Kaya being the one meant to find everyone. One of the kids finds a hiding spot that they decide to use. When we see one of Kaya’s other friends trying to find a spot to hide, we see that same kid (or at least someone who looks like that kid) walk up to Kaya’s friend and tells her about a hiding spot he found.

When Kaya’s done counting, she finds everyone, finding the two that went to that one hiding spot last. However, she recognizes that they’re not who they claim to be, but the words that one of them says makes Kaya hesitate like she did back at the festival. These two then decide to continue playing hide and seek with the other of Kaya’s friends, notably leaving Kaya out.

The person who was “it” in that round struggles to find one of the others, and when they get back to that hiding spot, they see that kid (or someone who looks like him) come out. They try to get her to go into the hiding spot as well, but Kaya takes the hit instead. During this time, Kaya seems to get the strength back to face specters since her friends are getting harmed, and vanquishes it. This spirit was trapping kids in there, with their actual bodies hanging among the specter.

Things seemingly don’t end up too badly overall in this segment, and I think it was a sweet segment. ’tis a bit of a shame it’s in one of these episodes that have three segments, but I don’t really think that’s much of a complaining point at the moment.

Cameras Aren’t Scary

This is a story that has some more focus on Mob. He’s watching Kaya (as per usual), and Namu’s right there with him. While Mob has a phone, he also takes some images digitally, as he claims that analog sources can get the supernatural better than digital sources, as evidenced when he took a picture of Namu and there was some aura around his hand. Anyway, while watching Kaya, Mob notices that there’s a specter that moves whenever he looks away.

Namu doesn’t see it at first, but once he realizes it’s in the camera, he reaches in and destroys it, with Kaya mostly unaware. She does know that Mob and Namu were there, though if I watched correctly, I believe she doesn’t know why.

While this one is simpler to summarize than the previous one, I don’t believe that makes it bad. It’s clear that between the previous segment and the next one, some time has passed. This was a good way to show that passing of time. And now…

Aunt Nana Isn’t Scary?

Serving as a continuation of sorts from the first segment, Chie decides to be open about the fact that she knows about the fact that Kaya can exorcise ghosts, and communicates what she learned from Namu, to which Nana says that the information is half true.

Basically, to pass on psychic power, a special ritual thing has to be done, and that guarantees a girl that will be able to fight specters will be born. Mirai did this to be able to give birth to Kaya, and while it seems like it should only be able to be done once, Mirai has seemingly tried that again due to what’s happening with Mirai.

At the very least, it seems that despite Kaya’s inner self being a specter, she’s still 100% her. I honestly found this segment to be sweet, and a nice way to end the episode. There’s 2 episodes left for this season, and since the manga is still ongoing, I hope that this series gets a season 2 at some point in the future. I absolutely love this show, and I’d love to see more!
