Doctor Elise: The Royal Lady with the Lamp Episode 8 – “Days Long Ago”

The episode begins with a recap of the ending of the previous episode, with Graham and Ven visiting the Hundreds House and seeing Elise there, seemingly making the connection that Elise is Rose. When Elise realizes that she can’t simply explain this away, she apologizes for the fact that she was hiding her identity from them. Ven vocalizes that he suspected that Elise and Rose were the same, and the two let Elise know that she’s able to leave since Graham and Ven proved to the emperor that Elise had no ill will.

Elise returns to working at the hospital, with Graham referring to her as “Lady Clorence” when the two of them are alone. Elise hands Graham a report, and when Graham gives a glare and sighs, even noticing that Graham doesn’t return for a while, Elise makes the assumption that Graham is mad at her for concealing her identity. Concerned about Graham, Elise stops by his house and meets Yodelle, the nursemaid. During her visit, Elise tells Yodelle about what Graham is like in the hospital, and in return, Elise learns a bit about Graham himself.

While Yodelle experiences some pain, she merely brushes it off as her getting older, but Elise seems to suspect that it isn’t that, especially when Yodelle collapses on the way to get snacks to go with the tea that she got earlier. Elise chooses to call for Graham, and the two get in a carriage to take Yodelle to the hospital. Elise chooses to analyze Yodelle, and with the observations that Elise made, both Graham and Elise realize that Yodelle needs treatment immediately, with Graham even instructing the carriage to take a different route than usual, with Graham asking Elise to help him with the surgery.

The surgery is a success, and Elise offers to write the operation report. After noticing Elise’s handwriting, however, Graham decides to write it. While Graham is writing the operation report, Elise asks why he became a doctor, and Graham opens up to Elise about his past. After heading outside to see the stars, Elise also decides to ask if Graham was mad at her for concealing her identity, and Graham reveals that he was frustrated with Elise’s handwriting, and chose to take time off to focus on his studies. The episode ends with a bit of a montage sequence, that leads into Yodelle waking up in the hospital with Graham looking over her. Some of the other doctors walk in, and after seeing Doctor Graham there, ask if they can head to his office to ask him about something, with Graham deciding to go with them.

I found myself enjoying the story in this episode. It provided a way to develop Graham more as a character, and it showed what a change in status quo could look like, even if only through a temporary lens. With how the episode ended, I don’t know how the story is gonna continue next week, but I can’t wait to see it!
