The episode begins by tracking back to events that occurred at the end of the previous episode, and we find out that the resolution to the cliffhanger that was left previously was that Mikhail jumps in to protect Elise, after having overheard what her attackers planned on doing, having a sword fly and land in the water.
I will note that the title of the episode appears directly after the opening credits in this episode, compared to the previous episodes where it appears directly before the ending credits. Some of the other members of the nobles’ faction try to step in as well, but Mikhail stops them as well. Once Elise is safe, Elise says that she has to get to where the emperor is to be able to help him. Mikhail takes her over to the hospital, where Elise is quick to ask about the emperor’s condition. After hearing about it, Elise decides to provide what would be the most likely answer to what is going on for someone with no irregularities.
When those don’t cause his health to stabilize, Elise comes up with a solution…though it will require permission from a family member to continue with, due to it not being something that hasn’t been commonly used during this time. After calling over the crown prince, he gives permission for the surgery to commence. In the surgery room, Elise makes the cut where she thought it should be…just to find nothing. It’s nice to see a moment of what seems like a failure for Elise, as it shows that even with her additional medical knowledge, she isn’t able to get the answer right the first time.
Of course, after thinking it over, she does think of somewhere else that could be the impacted area, she cuts it to find both the blood clot and something that seemed to have caused all of this, meaning once everything is properly closed up, the surgery would be a success. Once all of that is done and the news is provided to Linden, Elise decides to head to the area where the physician’s exam is occurring. Yes, we finally get to see the physician’s exam! Before Elise takes it, she and Linden have a talk, and due to Linden promising to get her a strawberry tart, she seems to make a connection involving him and Ron. Before she can vocalize her question, however, a bell rings, causing Elise to head to the area where the exam is taking place.
We have a brief scene of Elise taking the exam, and then we cut to a board of doctors talking about one of the exams that got turned in and its high score, a 98 out of 100, with only two missed questions. I think that it’s better for this write-up if I don’t state what the two missed questions are, just because I think the scene is funnier if you go in without knowing what the two missed questions are about. However, Elise has passed the exam. After seeing a discussion between the emperor and his aid, we see Elise come in and take the emperor in a wheelchair through the garden, having a discussion with him about their wager, and how it isn’t technically over since she still needs to prove that her worth as a doctor is more important than her being the empress. We end with a montage of scenes that occur after the events of the episode with a bit of narration from Elise.
This was a fun and entertaining way to end this season. Doing research into the manhwa, it appears that it’s still releasing chapters in English, with it having started into something that it calls a “Sequel”. Unfortunately, it appears that the chapters in English are only available digitally on a service where you have to pay after a while, so while I would love to throw down some money to see how the storytelling is different between the manhwa and the anime, I don’t really feel comfortable doing that for something that is only available digitally, since once the rights are lost, at least for the service that the Doctor Elise manhwa is on, I’d only have access to the chapters I purchased.
Okay, I went on a bit too long of a tangent regarding the manhwa there. Was the anime fun? Yes! Am I hoping for a second season? Yes! Will I recommend this anime to others? …not yet. After all, while the ending was good, there’s still a lot more in the manhwa, and I want to wait for a second season to see if the story is still as good in the second season compared to the first. It’s going to be weird to not be watching this anime starting next week, but it’s a change that I’m going to get used to.
