Okay, new week, new episode of Always a Catch!, and unsurprisingly, me ranting about a translation decision in the title for the next episode that just astounds me, which I’m just going to get out of the way now. Right now, structure wise, we’ve had:
- Episodes 1-6: “How…”
- Episodes 1-3: “How I…”
- Episodes 4-6: “How the One That Got Away…”
- Episodes 7-8: “The [fill in the blank] of the One That Got Away”
So you’d probably expect Episode 9 to play along with this, maybe bring up another thing of the One That Got Away. No. It’s “The One Who Got Away Plays Cupid”. We’ve replaced “that” for “who”. I know this change is purely just in semantics, but I don’t like the lack of consistency in these episode titles when it comes to referring to characters. And it’s all because they set me up to expect a pattern with the first three episodes. I doubt that I’d have an issue with this if the first three episode titles were something like “Broken Up But Not Engaged?!”, “Pulled In A Catch!”, and “Lady Training” instead of what we officially got, because those don’t follow an explicit pattern. At least Kaya-chan Isn’t Scary set up a pattern with its episode titles and stuck to it. This one seems to have set up a pattern only to leave the guidelines entirely.
I’ll talk about the actual episode now, it’s just that I needed to get that off of my chest.
This episode served two purposes: showcasing the aftermath of the plot line regarding the “kidnapped” daughter of the village chief and how things turn out there. It’s a happy ending on this front, though the reason I’m not really talking about it is because it’s not really the big focus of the episode.
No, instead, my focus is on the thing so important it’s the title of the episode: the secret date. Mimi and Renato make a stop along the way back to Rubini to have a date while tossing their titles to the side. They don’t really hide that much (which works for Mimi since her engagement to Renato hasn’t been publicly announced yet, but Renato’s disguise needed some work), with Raimondo and some of Renato’s men choosing to tail them just to make sure that nothing went wrong on that front, which I thought was sweet.
While they have to deal with people trying to follow them, as well as Mimi getting hit on by a guy after Renato left to get a wet cloth after Mimi spilled some grilled squid sauce on herself. Honestly felt really glad when that guy got scared off by Renato.
We also know that Renato will be publicly announcing the engagement he and Mimi have at an event in one month (in the series), and gives Mimi a chance to back out of the engagement if she doesn’t feel comfortable, to which Mimi is like “nah man, I wanna marry you”, basically setting that in stone.
Okay, cool, great, Episode 8 and we’ve already had the confession. Super fun episode, though. Which makes me wonder what direction Episode 9 will go in once it releases. Mimi and Renato are such a cute couple.
