“Could you hold on a minute before you continue?”
CONTENT WARNING: I am carrying over the major spoiler warning from Episode 30 due to this episode concluding the plotline opened up in that episode.
*sigh*
Okay, this was certainly an episode of all time. Not one of my favorites, but certainly an episode. I’ll be honest, this rambling is just meant to prevent episode details from leaking out into social posts. I don’t know how effective it will be for the Fediverse, but I’m trying.
Cure Arcana was in this episode longer than I thought she would be. Still limited to the second half of the episode, but still longer than I would’ve thought she’d be in there.
The Eclipse Shadow form is enough to cause the Cures to detransform after getting hit. This is also where we get more lore about the initial prophecy that was guiding the story. Eclair is the great king because she has a sparkle in her eye and the other folks with sparkles in their eyes aren’t because they just weren’t cool enough or something, I dunno, I’m still trying to piece all of this together.
And the world getting enveloped by shadows part is Luluka utilizing the shadow power because, based on the subtext I currently have, these two may have feelings that are more than friendship for each other. Again, still trying to piece all of this together.
She begged for more of the shadow power, which gave her wings. …was that dose infused with Red Bull or something? I’m sorry, that was probably a terrible joke, but I needed to have something that I can understand here.
Anna (after transforming into Answer) and Mikuru (after transforming into Mystique) give encouragement to Kurea, who transforms into Eclair, takes an item from Mashutan, and uses her powers to collide with the powered up Eclipse Shadow.
Luluka and Kurea have a heart-to-heart, where Luluka recalls her past and why she even became a member of the CUREtto Detective Agency in the first place, and is like “I wanna be with you, Kurea!”, which is enough for the Shadow power to dissipate and for Kurea to be able to give Luluka the item.
As it turns out, this item is a new transformation item, which Luluka uses to transform into Cure Arcana.
You can tell it’s a different form because there’s no Shadow in the name anymore.
Decchi Agein doesn’t like how this is going, however, and summons a shadow to serve as an enemy. Arcana has cool moves, but to take it down, we need the power of friendship with a new finisher attack! And…man, do I not like it.
The powers of Pochitan, Mashutan, and Shushutan combine to make a Makoto Jewel that Luluka puts into her staff. Using the power makes tarot cards that float themselves in front of Answer, Mystique, and Eclair, which they open to get their own rods and Makoto Jewels. Then each one opens their rod and is all like “This is our answer!”, and release beams that take down the enemy. It definitely feels like they’re cheaping out on having this attack make copies of Arcana’s weapon. But since it gives everyone spotlight, I’ll give it that much.
After Decchi Agein and the Phantom Thieves’ Guild run out (including Goemon taking the Tear Arcana Rod), the Cures detransform and have a conversation. It’s clear that we’ll be continuing this plotline in the next episode, but I hope that after an episode or two, we’ll finally get back to Anna’s part of the plot. Please. I just want to have the Anna and Mikuru plot again.
At the end of the episode we ALSO get to see Usonoir getting a new prediction from the Tome of Mirages that seems to be having the next big clash line up with the end of the year and the fear of Y2K…
Now, you may be wondering: why am I not bitching about Luluka’s character arc?
At first, I thought that it would’ve been a waste of her character and that a different arc would’ve served her a lot better. Then I remember that I can write my own stories, so I made my own character for one of my stories that has the arc that I wish that Luluka had. This should allow me to judge Luluka on her own terms instead of judging her based on the arc that I wanted her to have.
I’m still going to give this series a chance, even if it’s currently not matching my expectations. I’ll just let the series speak for itself, and hope that it ultimately has a satisfying conclusion.
