Sara Watches Detective Conan: Episode 15

Before people ask, yes, I’ve heard about the fact that we’re getting more new Detective Conan episodes on Crunchyroll and Netflix in America on November 1st, and yes, I’m excited to see them when they do come out. While I’ve already caught up to the most recent manga chapters, Ive always loved interacting with the anime, so seeing how TMS chose to adapt those cases is going to be an exciting thing for me to say. Now, let’s actually get into the subject of the post.

EPISODE 15: The Missing Corpse Murder

Anime Original or Manga Sourced?: Manga sourced, Chapters 56 through 58

Is this my first time experiencing this story?: No

Before we even get into the setup that leads to Conan and the others discovering the case of the episode, there’s one thing I need to talk about.

Conan Edogawa juggling a soccer ball in a classroom while Genta yawns and we see enough of Ayumi's head to signal that she's laying down.
“Hold on guys, gotta make sure that the audience doesn’t forget I do this from time to time.”

I fully understand that Conan is the shrunken Shinichi Kudo and that Shinichi = great at soccer and thus has the extra control to prevent the ball from doing anything that makes this kind of situation unsafe, but I’m sorry, considering the fact they’re currently in a classroom, if Conan makes even one mistake with his juggling, it’d be a disaster. Like, I’m sorry Conan, but I don’t think distance is enough to save you on this one. Plus, I’ve also gotta criticize my favorite blorbos sometimes.

Anyway, Genta, Mitsuhiko, and Ayumi are complaining about how they don’t have many cases coming to them, to which Conan’s internally like “obviously! If we were just raking in clients, then we wouldn’t have to worry at all!”, though that doesn’t mean there isn’t a client coming! A kid from the next class over comes to Class 1-B, asking for help to find his cat Akira. At first, Genta, Mitsuhiko, and Ayumi want to turn down the case because it isn’t something like a kidnapping or a murder. With the promise of getting Kamen Yaiba cards (and rare Kame Yaiba cards at that!) made, however, Genta, Mitsuhiko, and Ayumi decide to take the case, with Conan helping them out…though being exasperated at how easily they folded once rare Kamen Yaiba cards got added into the equation.

While the group search, they find themselves unsuccessful in finding the cat at first, with Genta even demanding the payment now despite being unsuccessful. Conan then decides to show the kids how it’s done, asking the client if there’s anything distinctive about the cat that makes it stand out from others. The client points out that its meow is different from the other cats, and even provides a demonstration of the meow…to which the cat responds! While they find it coming out of a house nearby, they also notice that there’s blood on the cat! While the genuine kids believe it to be the cat’s blood, Conan quickly realizes that the blood isn’t the cat’s, and thus climbs over the gate of the house to get to the window the cat climbed out of to see what blood the cat got on it.

Conan Edogawa climbing over a gate.
Okay, I just wanted to have a screencap of Conan climbing the gate somewhere in this writeup.

Genta, Mitsuhiko, and Ayumi quickly follow after him, and with the setup of an upside down garbage can (or something that looks similar to it) that they all stand on, the four look through the window…to find a dead body! So, naturally, after all of them climb over the gate again, Conan decides to call the police.

The police do in fact arrive, and while the Detective Boys are there on the ground to talk to him…

Conan Edogawa sits on a phone booth while Inspector Megure looks on.
“Don’t worry Inspector, I made sure to secure the high ground before your arrival.”

…just to see Conan on top of the phone booth. Whatever, that’s my blorbo, go Conan, absolutely command the high ground. But once Inspector Megure gets caught up on the situation, the police, the Detective Boys, and Conan ring the doorbell and get greeted by someone who lives there. While this resident tries to play it off like nothing’s going on, Megure goes to where the body was reported to be found…only to find a squeaky clean bathroom and no body.

However, as Megure believes that the body has to still be in the house because Conan didn’t see anyone enter or leave from his phone booth roof perch, everyone (minus the resident) engages in a top-to-bottom search of the house.

During the search, this resident’s brother returns from wherever he was, only to see…well, this. Genta accidentally breaks a vase, to which it seems like the resident we saw earlier actually reprimands Genta. Thankfully, it appears that the vase wasn’t worth that much anyway, and we eventually get to the point where there’s only one room left to check. It gets checked…only for it to appear that the other resident is just asleep while watching TV. And as the TV gets turned off when the brother asks if the resident could turn off the TV when they’re asleep, it seems like it’s an open-and-shut case. While Conan does ask about the possibility of someone sneaking out with the body tied to their own through the backyard (since Conan’s perch couldn’t see that far), police test it only for it to be proven to be impossible.

Megure and the police leave the scene, with Megure himself leaving some harsh parting words.

Megure giving a disapproving look. Subtitles say "Even if you did catch that gang of Italian thieves,"
Megure giving a disapproving look. Subtitles say "it was still stupid of me to trust you!"
Emotional damage!

Conan, not being satisfied with the answer, and the other members of the League, in hopes that helping to catch a murderer will get more clients coming to them for help, sneak back onto the premises that night, with Conan sneaking inside and telling them to stay outside, saying he’ll communicate with them on his badge when he finds the body.

This is where I’ll stop recapping the case, as this is a very strong case that I think is best experienced with you seeing the confrontation blind. However, I will note that Conan solves the case and the culprit gets caught…though despite this, there isn’t a major uptick in clients for the Detective Boys. And while they keep taking jobs from that client thinking it will lead them to another incident, Conan’s narration confirms that the cat didn’t lead them to any further incidents.

Oh man, did this case put me on edge. This was the third time that I interacted with this case (once in my initial watch of the anime, once when I read the manga, and now having to rewatch this episode for this post), and I think it’s safe to say that this case put me on edge every single time I interacted with it, mainly because of the motivation behind the culprit’s decision to kill the victim. It creeps me out, but in a way that made the episode a lot more enjoyable. Even if you do not watch any other episode of the series, I highly recommend you sit down and watch this episode on your own at some point. Trust me, you won’t regret it.
