Are you guys happy that I can finally stop asking about when the hell the red haired girl is going to join the group? Because we finally got Shoko introduced to the group in this episode, which makes me happy! I was glad to get confirmation before this episode that Shoko was going to be a key part of this episode via Crunchyroll’s sharing of the character trailer for her. Shout-out to my mom for showing me that article on the day it popped up. After all, from my experience, a character doesn’t get a character trailer unless they’re going to end up being important.
Also, I don’t know if it’s just me, but how Crunchyroll appears to have translated the description for Shoko in their post is giving me yuri vibes. Don’t know if I’m just grasping for anything that gives me those vibes or not, however. Though, I wanna give the girl a hug after everything I’ve seen in the episode.
Yeah, in case you couldn’t guess, I feel like this episode properly managed to introduce Shoko as a character, get the viewer to care about her, and have her fit into the dynamic of the pre-exisiting group without disrupting too much, if at all.
Honestly, that was my biggest fear about Shoko being introduced so late: would she end up not fitting in as well due to the fact that we didn’t have as many episodes to really get used to Shoko as part of the group or to get to know her as a character, especially with her having her full introduction closer to the second half of the cour. Like, this episode is Shoko’s first major role in the series, and I’m glad that, in my eyes at least, it didn’t fumble.
Even if in a different sense, I feel like some people may be able to relate to Shoko’s character, mainly with having something that you want to take to a job, but people around you don’t think it’d be good enough for a job. While I’m glad that the people in my life are approving of the path that I want to take career wise, I fully understand that there are people who don’t have people like that in their life, and Shoko seems to be good representation for people who do match the basic gist of her characterization in that respect.
This episode also covering the topic of things that could be mistaken as minerals/rocks but aren’t those was also a good choice, in my opinion. After all, not every shiny thing is a mineral…or treasure, for that matter. And seeing the team working together on something other than looking for rocks, which I thought was cool.
I’d say that this episode is one of the best in the series so far, especially with seeing how two of the big finds we see in this episode (one from the past and one from the present) get seen together at the end of the episode before the title reveal for the next episode. It was the cherry on top of this metaphorical sundae, and I honestly wouldn’t wish for any other end to this episode than that.
Honestly, I’m excited to see Shoko in more episodes. This was honestly the best way to introduce her, and I really like how her voice sounds, so props to her voice actress, as she did a great job!
