Always a Catch! Episode 11 – “The One That Got Away Gets Dragged Into Romantic Trouble”

“I don’t wanna talk about this episode!” I say as I sit down and proceed to write my simulcast writeup about this exact episode because it’d be more suspicious if this post was absent than if it was present.

Look guys, I’m sorry, but I was not a fan of this episode overall, mainly because the plot of it kicked off of one specific man. If you’ve read any of my posts from prior to this one, you probably know why. Yeah, I am straight up just not a fan of Ireneo. While it appears he’s less bad than I thought due to Mimi being confirmed to be an adult in this episode, unfortunately the seeds of me disliking Ireneo have been planted far too deep for this episode to do anything. Sorry Ireneo fans, but I don’t think there’s anything you can say to convince me otherwise at this point.

“What is the plot for this episode?” you might be asking. Ireneo doesn’t get invited to ball. Mimi feels bad for him, much to my annoyance. Mimi goes after someone only to be at the annex and run into Ireneo. Ireneo asks her to slip him a peach tart and to me it seems like she only agrees because something he did reminded her of her little brother. Scenes where Mimi and Ireneo hang out, with Mimi getting drunk. Our main characters who aren’t Mimi working together to figure out where Mimi went after they notice a peach tart is gone. Someone trying to attack Mimi and Ireneo. Mimi fights them off. Aftermath with Mimi, Renato, and Raimondo. Ugh, that’s basically the important bits of the plot. There’s other nuances with the plot I didn’t bring up, but I cannot be bothered to do so all because of Ireneo. If it weren’t for him, I’d be going so deep into this episode.

Normally, characters like Ireneo aren’t enough to grind my gears like this. But he’s grinding them, so that means whenever he’s on screen, my viewing experience gets worse as a result. I honestly feel like if Ireneo fell into a different archetype (or this series didn’t play Ireneo’s archetype in this specific manner), I wouldn’t hate him as much. Thankfully, it appears that he exits the spotlight for the next episode.

Also thankfully, we go back to the “How I…” naming scheme for the episode titles. Why did we ever change Mimi to “The One that Got Away”, and why did we ever drop the “How” or switch to “[descriptor] of The One that Got Away”? Whatever, at least I can have higher hopes that I’ll actually enjoy the next episode. I should have more to say next week.
