Ruri Rocks Episode 13 – “Look Up, Examine, Search! And Next!”

This is gonna be such a bittersweet post for me. Bitter because this is the final episode and there’s yet to be news of a season 2 of this series, but sweet because I’ve genuinely enjoyed watching this series as it comes out, and this episode was one of my favorites of the series, probably only behind the previous episode in terms of my enjoyment.

The post credits scene of the previous episode helped to explain why the characters are even here in the first place. My guess is that there likely wasn’t enough time in this episode to be able to fit in that scene, yet it was an important scene, so they needed to fit in in somewhere, and figured that after the credits of the previous episode was the best place to put it. And let me make one thing clear, I am absolutely not complaining about this. If a scene like that is needed, then absolutely do what is required to get that scene in.

But the focus of this episode is meteorites, meaning we’ve got space wrapped up in this now. But areas of study commonly overlap with each other, so the fact that space is wrapped up in this isn’t too much of a surprise in my book.

But it was still nice to see the entire group come together for one last adventure. And the fact that we got to see a montage of other adventures that the crew go on (with Aoi actually being in some of them, making her the secret fifth member of this CGDCT group!) was a nice touch as well. Since I’ve never read the source material, I don’t know if those adventures are sourced from there or if they were all anime original for the montage (or maybe a mix of both), but it was nice to see that they keep hanging out together even after the meteorite adventure.

And while the “thank you for watching” graphic suggests to me that there may not be a second season, I’m still highly satisfied with where the anime left off. And while I’d love to see more of Ruri’s adventures in any capacity, maybe it’d be more fun to try and come up with more adventures for Ruri on my own.

After all, while she’s not my character, I can still imagine her walking into a McDonald’s and ordering off of their menu. And if you can imagine a character in a scenario that doesn’t connect to the main plot, that’s a sign that they’re able to exist outside of the story, which is always a good sign for a character.

But I’m gonna miss seeing Ruri and Nagi and Imari and Seto every Sunday. I’d 100% recommend this series to people if they’re looking for a show about girls doing things that follows an atypical gathering structure for the girls.

And I think my mom would be proud to know that, unlike mono, this show actually stuck to the fact that high schoolers are hanging out with people from outside the school while still keeping the thing they do that’s the draw of the series in mind.

And now, for one final time…

Ruri Tanigawa from Ruri Rocks truly rocks.
