“Could you hold on a minute before you continue?”
CONTENT WARNING: Spoilers for the ending of the episode. I believe it’d be impossible for me to discuss this episode without bringing up the ending. While one could argue that the title already discusses what I’m calling a spoiler, this classification is just to be on the safe side.
I was considering whether this should be a content warning for the actual contents of the ending or if I should just mark it as a plain old spoiler warning. I decided to do the spoiler warning instead because I feel like the title of this episode already gives you a pretty good idea of what’s going to come within the episode. I still recommend watching the episode before engaging with this writeup, as I believe that my writeup does not do this episode justice, and that you’d be best watching the episode yourself instead of just relying on my writeup.
This episode follows a cat named Pompora as he reflects on his life before, like the episode suggests, he passes on to his final resting place. This reflection includes things like him falling in love, having kids…you know, the standard things one would reflect on if they believed they were going to die soon.
Honestly, I don’t think there’s much I can say about the part of this episode that’s Pompora reflecting on his life. I know that’s the majority of the episode is about Pompora reflecting on his life, but I just…wasn’t attached to that part of the story. Maybe it’s because I don’t recall Pompora appearing in any episodes prior to this one and thus I never got the opportunity to really grow attached to him, maybe it’s just how tired I’ve been recently, but the part I was most attached to was the scene where the cat dragon found Pompora’s dead body, as well as the scene where it’s revealed that in the future there’s now a plant that grows pompora berries where Pompora’s body was found, even if some of those berries come out sour.
Maybe the source of my attachment comes from the fact that despite how I act, I still may not be over losing someone I was close to. That’s as far as I will open up about on that front.
Now, that doesn’t mean it’s a bad episode. Just one that didn’t really resonate well with me. Maybe someone else will appreciate the actual meat of the story better than me. While I will give it credit for making me a bit emotional, it probably wasn’t at the part where it was supposed to be emotional.
Now, for the final episode that’s airing next week, I need to discuss something that’s been included at the end of each episode, after the part that reveals the title of the next episode, telling a portion of a story of the cat dragon, the forest cats, and a festival. Considering that the next episode is titled something like “The Cat and the Festival”, I think these little parts were meant to tie into this episode. I’ve never read the source material, so I have no clue if that’s the case or not. Well, guess we just have to wait for next week, where I should hopefully not need to delay the post because of stuff that I literally cannot control again.
