I’m going to also limit this post to being my thoughts, because this episode is one where I think you not only need to watch the rest of the series, but also the episode itself to truly feel the impact of the episode…and as a result, I don’t want this review to serve as a replacement for watching the episode. Even then, with the writeup I did last week, there wouldn’t be enough for you guys to feel the impact that the episode has. Anyway, I better get to talking about the episode.
First of all, I enjoyed all of the parallels (is that the right term?) to events that happened earlier in the series. It’s a good way to show how these characters have developed throughout the series. This can be most clearly seen with the first parallel in the episode, and seeing the difference between how meekly Mako acted in a similar situation in Episode 1 to how she acts now.
And honestly, when you see how the club interacts now and how seriously they take the club now, it’s hard to believe that Shinon initially picked the name to serve as a cover for lazing about. And with the post credits scene…yeah, it’s clear that they’re taking the club seriously now, and aren’t just using it to laze around.
This whole entire episode was a perfect way to wrap up the cour and (for me, at least), the Spring 2025 season as a whole. And while the ending leaves room for more stories to be told (more members join the club, which results in more characters to meet and develop), either by official or fan means.
And (to me, at least), it was clear that the staff that worked on this were passionate on this, with seemingly nothing sacrificed during production. Yeah, some aspects of this series may feel “average”, but it’s literally just a show about cute girls doing cute things. We don’t need shounen anime level of animation.
And while I would love to watch a Season 2 of this show, I’d honestly understand if it doesn’t get picked up for a second cour. But even if these twelve episodes are the only ones we ever get, I’m still completely content with the ending in this episode.
If you want a show to chill out to and are new to the cute girls doing cute things genre, I’d say that Food for the Soul is a good starting anime, as it’s a chill and wholesome show from start to finish, and the detail on the food will probably make you want to eat it. I don’t know though, I’m not you.
If you’ve watched a lot of cute girls doing cute things shows, though, then I’d probably only recommend that you watch Food for the Soul if you think that the idea of the Food Culture Research Club is enough of a pull for you to check the show out, of if you’d be willing to see a more socially reserved (at the start) character as the protagonist.
Overall, I’m gonna miss these girlies. If the series comes back for Season 2, I’d be more than willing to make a return trip to this series to see how these girls develop further. But all in all, gochisōsamadeshita (thank you for the meal in Japanese), Food for the Soul, and may we see each other again at the next meal.
