If there’s one thing that tends to draw me into a series, it’s when it has a protagonist that isn’t the best socially. Maybe it’s because I’m able to see myself in them that makes me so drawn to them, but it’s always nice to see series where the protagonist isn’t an outgoing extrovert. Not that extroverts are bad, it’s just that it always sucks for me to see introverted characters on the sidelines.
The interactions between the characters were fun. Though, while he is the reason that the plot is starting in the first place, I don’t like Louis. I don’t know why, but something about him just rubs me the wrong way. I did enjoy Isabelle as a character, though. I felt like she did a good mean rich girl laugh (or as I believe my mom calls it, a “Kodachi laugh”), so when I saw that the credits for her voice actress include Anya Forger in Spy x Family and Frieren in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, I was surprised, as those are the last characters I would expect to ever pull out the mean rich girl laugh. Hell, I didn’t even recognize the voice until I looked at the listing for them on My Anime List. If that’s not a sign of a good voice actress, I don’t know what is.
I also enjoyed the interaction between Monica (whose voice actress I found out played Luna in Clevatess and Nana in Food for the Soul) and her familiar Nero (whose voice actress I found out played Fanatio in Sword Art Online: Alicization). Though, to be fair, I’m a sucker for cats. So with a combination of the shy girl protag (which one could probably figure out from the title of the series) and the cat that serves as a familiar to Monica was a fun touch.
I also have to point out how good the sound design in this episode is. Now, this usually isn’t something someone would point out, but when a soundproofing barrier gets used in the episode and we see the effects take place, it really makes you appreciate the role that sound design plays in a show a lot more. Heck, when I heard the horse noises in the background of one of the scenes, I had actually thought there were horses outside my house for a brief moment. And that’s what I think good sound design should do: make you forget your own reality for brief moments while keeping it sounding realistic.
Though it seems like this series has an interesting premise ahead of it, due to what Monica has been asked to do. And, honestly, I can’t wait to see it all play out, as it appears that the studio behind this series pays attention to detail to ensure that it’s an enjoyable experience. Now, the big question is, will they keep up this attention to detail throughout the rest of the series? The only way to answer that question is by continuing to tune in each week to find out, which is exactly what I plan on doing!
