Where do I even begin? There’s just so much in this episode that I could talk about, it’s kind of infuriating. After all, what if I pick the wrong thing and get all of you upset? Maybe I’ll just start with what will likely go well the best: the usual for the Cure Eclair arc.
Cure Eclair Suspect That Gets Focus In This Episode: Kurea
Cure Eclair Hint(s) From This Episode (SPOILERS!)
* A more interesting hint is that Luluka’s reason for working with the Phantom Thieves seems to have something to do with Cure Eclair, as we see Usonoir hold a Makoto Jewel that looks to be close to her color.
My Stance On This Suspect Being Cure Eclair Prior To Watching The Episode: I believe that Kurea is a red herring.
Do I Think My Stance Is Still Justifiable After The Episode? (SPOILERS!)
Disclaimer: Spoilers in the collapsible sections may get repeated unmarked later in this writeup. If you don’t want to take the risk of getting spoiled for Meitantei Precure, please stop reading this writeup here.
Okay, unless this series pulls a massive fucking plot twist, I think they’ve already revealed who Cure Eclair is just based on the utilization of a specific something, which I only keep in my mind because of a specific episode of this exact series. But I’ll go into more details once I actually get to that point.
We yet again begin the episode with Anna and Mikuru going over the two previous Cure Eclair suspects, getting caught on which one could be Cure Eclair. Which, honestly, mood.
Meanwhile, at the bakery place, we see Luluka visit and ask for ice cream. Kurea does so, and even gives Luluka some free cake, which I find to be neat. There’s also a photo, which is revealed to be of the older man that works there when he was younger. He does end up taking a call, being an order for Jett, which Kurea delivers to the CUREtto Detective Agency.
During her time at the CUREtto Detective Agency, Kurea notices the picture evidence they have from the smashing of the Makoto Jewel, which Anna and Mikuru point out that they’re still trying to figure out. It’s during this trip that Kurea drops a line about fragrance unlocking memories.
Anyway, remember that photo I brought up? Yeah, that has a Makoto Jewel in it, so Luluka and Goemon go out to get it, even involving Luluka delivering a calling card to Kurea.
There’s a stand-off outside the place with Anna, Mikuru, and Jett coming in to defend Kurea, with Goemon just nabbing the picture while everyone’s distracted and running off. They manage to catch up to him and Luluka, though they do witness a Hanninda get summoned. The girls transform and face off, though Kurea runs in the direction of the chaos that ensues.
This is what’s forcing me to throw my “Kurea is a red herring” thinking straight out the window. If I may take you back to my writeup for Meitantei Precure Episode 18, I said the following:
“From here, aside from some intervention from both Ran and Conan prior to Anna and Mikuru transforming, as well as Conan running out to where Anna and Mikuru should be to find them gone…“
Remember, they transformed because a Hanninda was summoned. At this point in the series, summoning Hannindas means that civilians are unable to see what’s happening.
The fact that Kurea is able to see what is happening here means that she is most likely Cure Eclair.
Now do you know why I opened my post Cure Eclair arc candidate talk with that specific line? Now, people could come at me with the “oh, but-but her fairy!” thing, but I don’t think that holds up. We only know that Cure Eclair has lost her memories. So far, we have yet to hear any word about Cure Eclair’s fairy, so we cannot say anything about her fairy.
The fight occurs with Answer, Mystique, and Goemon, while Arcana Shadow talks to Kurea, but we all know what happens: Answer and Mystique win, bada bing bada boom.
Kurea drops a line about the meaning of lilies, and Anna and Mikuru go back to the agency to see that a lily has bloomed. Remembering Kurea’s words, they come to the conclusion that if the person who is Cure Eclair smells the scent of the lily, Cure Eclair’s memories will return, with Jett promising to work on something to accommodate this.
Additionally, we also know exactly why Luluka is working with the Phantom Theives’ Guild: they have Cure Eclair’s Makoto Jewel!
Yet again, unless they pull a massive plot twist, rest in peace to my “Shiruku is Cure Eclair” theory, as I feel like this episode basically confirms that Kurea is Cure Eclair. Next week is Rei’s episode, but I already know that she can’t be Cure Eclair because Episode 14 already established that she can’t see what happens after the Hanninda is summoned (which was shown in the episode, but I didn’t say in my writeup, whoops.), which really makes me feel like the order of these episodes should’ve been swapped.
It could’ve led into a very interesting two part case for the Cure Eclair reveal. But nope, we’ve gotta deal with our final candidate first. Fun episode overall, though the fact that my theory was proven wrong kind of kills my excitement for the series. Hopefully we still get to see Shiruku after this arc is over, because it’d be a shame if she only appears twice in the entire series.
