Alrighty! It’s Clevatess writeup time! This one is late, and for that, I apologize! Watching this episode literally slipped my mind on the literal day of the simulcast since there was already so much that I was trying to keep up with on that day, and by the time I did remember that I still needed to do this, I felt like it would be too late in the day for me to do the writeup to the quality I wanted it to be at. Enough dilly dallying, time for me to actually get into the writeup!
This episode continues the progression of the whole “Clevatess versus the school” plotline that was started back in Episode 4. The students are able to fight back against the dark beasts that Clevatess sent by listening to the whispering voice (Vordin) and using their powers with a power boost from him. Clevatess has also been utilizing residual power from the book of Toah to power up.
There’s also development on the Alicia side of the plotline: she doesn’t die, but she does break out and use her powers again. One of the professors at the school who’s there undercover also managed to come into the scene, even with a weapon that definitely needed some crafting.
Normally I’d get so much deeper into covering the plot, but it didn’t really feel like there were any major plot developments in this episode, despite how we get to see the perspectives of basically all the main fronts here.
It almost felt like this episode — and the arc as a whole — is struggling to find a good focus at this point. It’s really a shame. Season 1 did a good job at setting up its world and nicely pacing its story parts that it almost feels like Season 2 is failing to come into its shadow. When looking at the amount of chapters that are available on Webtoon in English (don’t know how far that is compared to the Japanese) if you fork over coins, so it feels like there should be enough content for Season 2 to come to a conclusion of some kind.
I have no clue if that conclusion will be a satisfactory one, or if it’s going to be one that falls on its face. This season has seven more weeks to prove itself, and I genuinely hope that I won’t feel like I’ve wasted my time once it’s over. After all, I heavily enjoyed Season 1, and I really don’t want my feelings to be mixed just because of Season 2.
