“Could you hold on a minute before you continue?”
CONTENT WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS FOR THE EPISODE. LIKE, I GENUINELY BELIEVE THAT I CAN’T MAKE THE POINTS THAT I WANT TO MAKE WITHOUT BRINGING UP THESE SPOILERS.
This is the second time that I’ve had to include a major spoiler warning in a content warning this week. I’m not even going to do the joke I usually do when things occur twice here. Also, regarding the episode title: I’m literally doing the exact way it’s written in Crunchyroll’s metadata at the time I’m writing this post, and honestly, I just don’t have the energy to change it.
Anyway, the episode begins with a scene establishing yet again that there are dark beasts sent by Clevatess attacking the students and how the students are fighting back with the additional power granted to them by the force known as the whispering voice, as well establishing that there’s going to be another force coming in.
This episode also develops more on the Alicia front of the story: she gets her side of the story communicated to the guy who’s basically working alongside the bird dark beast with the dark best serving as the interpreter for the human guy. Alicia herself also discovers that there’s a second layer to the world she’s in and dives into the cracks in the world, with her dark beast form disappearing from the real world.
While we don’t get much continuation with what’s happening with Clevatess himself is doing, the stuff with our main characters we’ve been following since Episode 1 of this entire season isn’t the reason why I decided that a major spoiler warning is necessary for this post. No, no, no. Remember when I was making statements earlier in the season that were something along the lines of “some things didn’t make sense to me at this time, context plz”?
We’re finally getting the context!
So, as it turns out, there’s this whole secret society that can also be classified as a cult, and three of the students (the two asshole twins and Eddie) sneak out of their dorms (as they were faking being asleep, which at the very least I can confirm with the twins) and put on the hoods that these guys wear in those meetings to sneak into it! While the twins go as far as replicating the faces (though not the hair) of two of the members that looked to see if they were asleep, Eddie just had the hood. He didn’t even have the forehead symbol.
Here, we learn that the person who’s been acting as that Romain dude isn’t even the guy himself! Instead, it’s Milea, the princess of Boelate! We also get her backstory, basically being that because of her bloodline, she’s more easily able to hear the voice, and is eventually told by Drel to ask who is speaking to her the next time she looks in the mirror.
It’s Vordin, and he uses whatever power he has to start manipulating her. She gets the book of Toah (or however it was spelled) somehow, most likely through Vordin, and we also find out exactly how she managed to take Romain’s place. She has a power where, if she sends someone to the mirror world, she can take their form and even copy their voice. This becomes most evident when “Romain”‘s actions changed when “he” began working at Solsein.
Milea, as the leader, is also preparing for something big: getting the book with the chapter of the forge and working to make the hero legend, and the kind of magic talked about in the ancient texts, real again!
Yeah, the whole “Romain isn’t actually Romain, he’s actually someone else in disguise” thing is exactly why I marked this as major spoilers. Because, hello, that’s a major twist?! Please tell me you guys understand why I marked it as major spoilers now. Even if it’s just the one thing, I feel like this is something that people would want to avoid getting spoiled for, hence the warning.
While this episode was more focused on providing exposition, I don’t think that’s a bad thing, as it provided some much needed context. While the anime is currently catching up to the English translated chapters available on Webtoon via the app, there’s always the potential that the original language is further ahead. Do I know that for sure? No. But there’s likely to be enough content for Season 2 to have a reasonable conclusion. I’d question why they made season 2 if there wasn’t enough content for it.
