“Could you hold on a minute before you continue?”
CONTENT WARNING: Spoilers. (I talk about the ending of the episode in more depth than I feel comfortable posting without a spoiler warning.)
This was one of the episodes of all time. Holy moly. /pos /pos /vpos
Look, that’s literally the only thing that I can think of to be able to lead into this post. I would’ve done something else, but I literally can’t think of something else. Sorry.
Unlike the previous episode, which includes moments from both the real world and the mirror world, this episode focuses exclusively on the real world. Considering what occurs in this episode, however, I feel like keeping to the real world was absolutely the right call. If we had cuts to the mirror world, the pacing of this episode likely would’ve been badly affected. I don’t know if that means that the next episode will be an Alicia focus episode or not, but I hope that we do get an Alicia focus episode next so that we have a nice balance.
We do have more scenes where the students of Solsein are fighting the dark beasts, and while pink-haired girl introduced in Season 1 does her best to fight back, Mary does end up getting taken out. We do learn more about her and her backstory, but based on events later in the episode, I think it’s safe for me to assume that she’s dead. Maybe something later on in the series will pull that rug out from under me, but I still think it’s safe to make this call now.
But the major momentum that comes from this episode is Ray and Clevatess. Ray himself makes it up to the tower and starts fighting Clevatess…and you want to know why?
It’s because Ray knew the person that Clevatess took the face of back when they were alive.
That person is Shiro, and Shiro once saved Ray from a dark beast. Shiro himself also had the dream of becoming a hero, though as we all know, he died during Clevatess’s attack on Hiderat after defeating the wave of heroes that Alicia was part of.
Ray himself also used up a lot of his power (and the power that the whispering voice gave him), and while Clevatess does show his real form to Ray, Ray utilizing his speed crest (because if I understood correctly he has two crests?) to assist Vordin in getting the book.
But Vordin has the book now. 5 episodes to go in this season, and we still need to wrap up the mirror world plotline and get this arc done with. I’m gonna give this series the benefit of the doubt and hope that it has the time to be able to get this to a satisfying conclusion (or at least a cliffhanger with an immediate Season 3 confirmation), but despite all of this, the episode was great at continuing to build the plot, and I can’t wait to see where the series goes from here.
