“Could you hold on a minute before you continue?”
CONTENT WARNING: SPOILERS.
…you know, despite how much I felt like I was hyped up for this episode, I still don’t feel like I’ve been moved from “leaning towards improvement”. I’m feeling like the next episode could change my mind, just based on what I saw in the episode preview (and especially the end of it), but alas, I don’t think that what I feel the episode did well was enough to outweigh the issues I have with it after seeing it. May as well just get into it.
Anna, Mikuru, Kurea, and Luluka get dragged to a bookstore via the power of the fairies sensing a Makoto Jewel in danger. As it turns out, some old dude had his gold medal for a darts tournament stolen, and that’s the object that both has the Makoto Jewel and gets stolen.
*checks episode title*
Okay, yeah, the object being stolen checks out, and unlike the previous episode, I cannot find any reason for the item to not be able to keep its Makoto Jewel in the situation its currently in. I still have no clue what happened in the previous episode to make the decision of the object they used to hold the Makoto Jewel.
After a high schooler pokes her head in after the chaos, our Cures begin investigating what happened, though when they use their Pre-Kit Mirror Loupes, evidence–or rather, the lack of a specific piece of evidence–has Anna and Mikuru make the connection as to who took the medal. And let me just say, seeing the Anna and Mikuru “that’s it! the culprit was that person!” animation in this episode felt so good after seeing so many cases solved by Kurea and Luluka. Finally, our actual main characters getting a spotlight.
The culprit (who’s actually Nijee in disguise) used a simple trick to nab the gold medal, and once the actual person who Nijee’s disguised as comes over, Nijee unmasks himself and makes a run for it. Anna and Mikuru chase after Nijee, though Luluka and Kurea stay behind to talk to the high schooler because something about her doesn’t line up.
After Mikuru uses her Pre-Kit Light to trip up Nijee, Kurea and Luluka catch up with Anna and Mikuru, and Nijee makes a Hanninda from the gold medal, and our four Cures transform. I was also excited to see the “I’ll show you my answer” bit at the end of the transformation go to Mystique. Friendly reminder that this line has basically been with Eclair since she joined the cast, and Arcana up until this episode, so the fact that we got a Mystique bit again is likely a good sign.
We have the usual fight, and I found it hilarious that each time the Hanninda attacked it got smaller. We also got a Eclair solo finisher in this episode, which while I’m not over the moon about it, considering that we saw Answer and Mystique use their solo attacks in this fight, I’m not going to be as bitter about the fact that Eclair got the finisher.
After Pochitan gets the Makoto Jewel via the standard protocol, the Cures detransform, and it turns out that the high schooler saw what happened…and as it turns out, the high schooler isn’t a high schooler, but instead Mafuru, the woman from Kurea and Luluka’s backstory, in disguise! 😮
As it turns out, Decchi Agein attacked the London CUREtto Detective Agency, causing destruction in the flowers there. The fairies have been scattered, and Mafuru came to Japan. She gives the Cures the freaking Star Kiraring thingamajig, and rides off to look for the fairies. It’s interesting to note that Mikuru stays standing and watching the direction that Mafuru went off in the longest. Hm…
Episode 37’s preview makes it look like a fun episode…and I saw a scene in it where we get to see Anna’s mom! Genuinely hope that we finally get some answers on the “Anna’s mom” front, and that the next episode is enough to finally move me from “leaning towards the series is improving” to “the series is improving”. I’m sorry, I want answers, and I genuinely hope that Episode 37 finally starts providing the answers I want!
Now, what issue do I have with the series that’s enough for me to not move to “the series is improving” yet? Well, I Mafuru’s present day introduction was too forced for my taste. I feel like it would’ve been a lot stronger if the Cures genuinely struggled to get to an answer, only for Mafuru to arrive, ask what happened, and then give the hint that cracks the case open, instead of arriving in disguise.
Oh, yeah, also Decchi Agein’s back in Japan. Yay. 😀
Okay, genuinely, I hope that Episode 37 is finally the episode where I feel like the series is improving.
