“Could you hold on a minute before you continue?”
CONTENT WARNING: Contains a revelation made in the end of the episode that is likely intended to be something that drives the plot forward from here that you’re likely supposed to go in blind to. In layman’s terms, SPOILERS!
Health update, in case anyone’s curious: feeling better compared to the last one! Still feel congested, but now I can say that the scales are tipping away from me feeling like complete and utter shit! Unless I think my health decreases enough for me to warrant giving you another update, I think this should be the last time that I include updates about my health in my posts.
However, I think Meitantei Precure is on the path of improvement for me…even if I’m going to hold back regarding a solid answer on whether this is the case or not until next week, just to see if we actually get a follow up on it directly before I get hyped for a plot point that doesn’t get more development past this mention until the point that’s past my cutoff if this series doesn’t stop slacking, as I want to give the series time to see if the characters actually get impacted by this, or if you could remove it and things would be the exact same.
I’ll actually get into the details later on in the post, but I think it’s time I finally start talking about the episode.
It starts with the chairwoman of Makoto Mirai Academy, the school that Anna and Mikuru attend, visiting the CUREtto Detective Agency to try and convince Luluka and Kurea to transfer into the high school division of the school. And man…this feels like the most forced way of “having all the Cures attend the same school!” setup that’s been used whenever it’s been invoked.
If the episode started with Luluka and Kurea already introducing themselves to the class, then I wouldn’t have had as much of an issue, and just assumed that they enrolled in their own time.
But no, apparently this setup was so important that we needed to see it! Because apparently while we can give mysteries in the show that we can have kids try and solve, god forbid if we have two of our Cures who were previously never shown attending school suddenly at school without a scene setting up why they’re there! /sarc
Anyway, we do have a scene of Kurea and Luluka introducing themselves to their new class and talking to the people who sit near them. During this talk, however, a love letter falls to the ground nearby, with Luluka and Kurea finding it. And of course, they decide that their best move is to talk to Anna and Mikuru during a break. Unfortunately, they don’t get to a reasonable conclusion for who the letter is intended for (except that it wasn’t for Luluka or Kurea) or who sent it before a bell rings to end the break.
So of course, the reasonable answer to this conundrum is for Kurea to use her PreKit Mirror Loupe (and its seemingly exclusive “Sparkle Copy” ability) to make copies of the four of them and send those copies to their classes, while the actual girls go to the classroom that Luluka and Kurea were in before and search for hints. Of course, the only hints they get are that there are two sets of fingerprints on the envelope: one being Luluka’s, and the other being the sender’s.
Oh, before I continue, there’s the usual “the Tome of Mirages predicts the location of a Makoto Jewel, with one of the thieves (Agesiene in this case) going out to go after it” moment, with Nijee and Goemon being asked to go after her. But like…this part is so formulaic at this point, do I even have to point it out anymore?
When they don’t have enough answers after school, Mikuru uses her Mirror Loupe to read the contents of the envelope without opening it herself…only to find out that the note is asking someone to meet at the cherry tree after school…meaning that if they can’t find the intended recipient, they’ll have to find the sender.
There’s 3 students waiting at the cherry tree, the only issue is who the sender is. Due to one of the people waiting being a girl, and the note was found near a group of girls, as well as it explicitly being said that the girl is waiting for a boy…yeah no, that’s not the sender. Leaving us with two boys. Unfortunately, since I don’t know the Japanese needed to read the credits to see if they actually get named, and I think that for everyone’s sake I should use fill-in names for these guys. I’ll call the one who was visually on the left Usotsuki, and the one that was visibly in the center Jofu. If they do have official names and I either just forgot them or they were revealed after this post (very unlikely for Usotsuki but could be possible for Jofu), my apologies.
Anyway, I don’t even think I needed to give Usotsuki a fill-in name, because as it turns out, he’s not the sender, all because he didn’t know how the letter is supposed to be opened! Which, alright, fair, I can accept that deduction. Usotsuki is actually Agesiene in disguise, with Nijee being in disguise as the girl. Goemon was in this mess, but you could literally remove his “disguise” appearance from the episode and literally nothing would change.
Anyway, Agesiene manages to convince Jofu that instead of including his feelings in a letter he should just say it to his crush’s face, and he seems to agree on that part, with Agesiene taking the love letter and turning it into a Hanninda.
Now, pause. I think I need to review my Meitantei Precure lore. Makoto Jewels are crystalized feelings that are within objects that people hold dear. As proven in Episode 12, if someone loses the dear feelings that they have for an object, then the object can lose its Makoto Jewel, though it can be recovered if they gain those feelings back. If Jofu no longer feels like he has a use for the love letter, shouldn’t that have caused the Makoto Jewel inside it to start the losing process? Or is somehow just carrying the feelings that the object was made to convey enough to keep the Makoto Jewel in?
Does that “an IQ too high?” meme officially apply to me now, or do I still need to do some stuff just to get there?
Anyway, this episode marks the debut of the shortened group transformation. And before you ask, yes, we still have that weird end shot walk in this, no need to ask. Also, hot take: I prefer playing the three full-length transformations back to back instead of having this shortened group transformation. At least the full length transformations had them transform in what feels like is the current hierarchy of the team (Arcana -> Eclair -> Answer and Mystique). This shortened transformation has Answer and Mystique start into the transformation, with us getting the “floral spin” from Eclair’s and at minimum one of Arcana’s “flower tap”s or whatever they’re called. If it was something where one transformation was used to show the transformation of the hair, one transformation showed the outfit transformation, and one transformation showed the accessory transformation, then I wouldn’t have had as many complaints with the transformation. Instead, it feels like the staff wanted to have as much of all of the transformations as possible, but with none of the downsides that comes from playing the full versions back to back.
Anyway, we have our formulaic fight, and while there is a scene involving Nijee and Goemon being hit by the Hanninda’s arrows (and thus falling in love with the Hanninda), this added literally nothing to the fight except a moment of comedy.
After the Hanninda’s defeat, we do get to see that asking out…and it’s acceptance. Woo. Or something.
Anyway, the entire thing that caused me to add that spoiler warning. Usonoir gets a message from Decchi Agein: the London CUREtto Detective Agency has fallen.
They better have this actively influence the plot, otherwise it feels like something that was unnecessarily brought up. The preview for the next episode has me hopeful for the future of this series. Meitantei Precure, you better not let me down now that my hopes are up. It’s possible that Episode 36 will be the episode that has me ultimately keep going with the series, it just depends on how it lands.
