Meitantei Precure Episode 38 – “Kurea’s Answer”

Okay, I’m going to be saying this to start the post so that I don’t forget to bring it up later. Due to Episode 39 being promoted as a crossover with Ojamajo Doremi, even if what I know of the episode so far seems to put that episode more in the vein of the episode that the other series Meitantei Precure had a crossover episode with had for their series, I will be removing my “keep or drop” judgment card from Episode 39 and giving it to Episode 41 instead. I want to judge the series based on it standing on its own two feet, and crossovers could introduce higher standards behind the scenes. So congratulations, I’m officially strapped in for one more episode of this series prior to deciding whether to keep this series as a simulcast or just drop it.

Anyway, let’s actually get into talking about this week’s episode.

The episode begins with Anna, Mikuru, and Luluka (alongside Pochitan and Mashutan) heading out of the CUREtto Detective Agency to go do their own thing, leaving Kurea, Jett, and Shushutan alone in the CUREtto Detective Agency.

With this time alone, Kurea begins to wonder why she has the power of the Forgotten Race. But whoops, that’s going to be too lore-heavy, and we can’t have that! So while Jett is trying to figure out how to open the Star Kiraring Brooch, we have a client come in who lets us know that the Phantom Thieves’ Guild sent them a notice letting them know they plan on stealing her plane ticket to Paris.

Decchi Agein appears, comments on how the agency is the final place where the Top of Lily flowers are blooming, and that soon blooming season for them will be over or something? Look, I’m still kinda tired, I think some things in this episode went in one ear and out the other for me.

But the other thieves get brought in, and they get situated at all the exits to prevent Kurea and the client from leaving, thus to make it easier to get the ticket. Kurea decides to take advantage of this and uses her Sparkle Copy ability with her Mirror Loupe to make copies of herself, the client, and the client’s ticket to send out all of the exits.

Unfortunately, when the actual Kurea and client go out later on, they do get caught and have the ticket stolen.

Okay, I need to backtrack a bit, as I need to talk about something that was established in this episode that makes Episode 35 worse by comparison. Here, Kurea establishes that once the ticket is used, the ticket loses its Makoto Jewel, implying that the feelings attached to the object are about the chance to travel, and not the overall dream the client has. Episode 35 uses a love letter for its Hanninda. According to this logic, wouldn’t it be the most natural to assume that the feelings in the love letter were about using the letter to confess instead of the crush in general, and that when the person who was planning on asking their crush out in that episode decided not to use the letter, shouldn’t the Makoto Jewel have died?

I know I already brought up that issue in Episode 35, but considering what’s playing out in this episode, I think I deserve to ask again, especially as this episode seems to have an item that’s a much closer comparison for the love letter than any of the episodes prior to Episode 35.

Anyway, make the Hanninda, cue the Eclair transformation, have Anna, Mikuru, and Luluka re-enter the picture, have their transformations, cue fight.

And you know how I said this was an Eclair focused episode? Well, Eclair gets beaten up pretty hard, and it seems like she won’t be able to go on and may even give up. However, the other Cures speak up about what Eclair had done for them, and thus a light on the Star Kiraring Brooch lights up, giving Eclair power to defeat the Hanninda.

…you know, even if unintentional, this is still feeding into my idea that the writers actually wanted to tell Luluka and Kurea’s story as the main story but the higher-ups said no so they made Anna and Mikuru to ride us into Luluka and Kurea’s story. But it seems this means each character will have at minimum one focus episode…unless they pull the shit they’ve been doing and have Anna and Mikuru’s lights be done together because “tHeY’rE tHe MiRaCuLoUs DuO!”, as it really feels like they’re only using that reasoning to avoid developing Mikuru into her own person.

Seriously, can we please get some good solo development for Mikuru? We know more about our two midseasons than we do a character we’ve been following since episode 1.

Anyway, the Cures win the battle, and they get to see the plane take off. Decchi Agein also realizes what the four lights in the most recent prophecy mean…which the viewer could easily figure out when Eclair’s light on the Star Kiraring Brooch lit up.

And like…I don’t care about this prophecy! The prophecy I’m actually excited about, the one that suggests Y2K, has yet to been brought up again since it was introduced! I understand it’ll likely take a while for that prophecy to get addressed again, but it’s what I actually want to see!

Anyway, next week is the Halloween special. Then, the week after it, assuming the leaks are correct, will be a week off for Meitantei Precure. That doesn’t mean I won’t be posting anything during my usual time on that day, however. After all, there’s still something that includes Meitantei Precure that fits into my niche that I still need to cover…
