Kaya-chan Isn’t Scary Episode 12 – “Kaya-chan Isn’t Scared”

With the fact that the episodes of the other shows that I review in this episode cycle were just average in my eyes, it felt like my expectations for this episodes were being lowered as a result. After all, if my two other new simulcasts that had wrapped up this season had endings that I found to be mediocre, then who’s to say that this one wouldn’t be one of those as well?

I’m happy to say that Kaya-chan Isn’t Scary was not one of those shows. Hell, it got me on the verge of crying. There is only one other simulcast that I’ve watched weekly since the beginning that’s been able to claim that achievement. You want to know what show that was? Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again. Though, to be fair, at the time that I was watching the finale, I was still processing the grief of losing one of my grandparents, so my emotional barriers were likely weakened because of that.

But with Kaya-chan Isn’t Scary, I can’t think of anything that could serve as something to weaken my emotional barriers that could connect to this show. Which means this show technically one-ups Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again, as it wasn’t something I was watching when I was already emotionally vulnerable.

This episode is split into two parts: the whole conflict with Mirai and her wanting to eliminate the Ebisumori clan (which takes up the majority of the episode), and an epilogue (for lack of a better word due to the final words that are seen in the episode) that wraps up the story of the anime, even if the manga is still ongoing at the time of writing.

The first part of the episode is definitely one that’s strongest emotion wise when you don’t know what’s going to happen going into it, but I will say that there’s plenty of scenes to develop characters and an ending to this section that makes my decision to stick with Kaya-chan Isn’t Scary during this anime season worth it. Definitely a lot more so than the other two shows I watched that also recently wrapped up.

As for the epilogue, we get to see the ceremony where Kaya and her class move up to the next grade, with Mob there after managing to buy off the photographer. He takes a picture of the class together, though the photo we see in the anime shows Kaya’s appearance when she’s fighting spirits. That form gets a grin, and then we see a “The End” on screen.

Because of that The End, I doubt that we’re going to get a second season of this show. But if somehow, against all odds, we do get a second season, then you guys know I’ll be adding it to my watchlist. While the episodes that are out right now can easily tell their own self contained story that you get a satisfying conclusion from in the end, the manga still being ongoing means there’s still more to Kaya’s story. However, I’m absolutely not mad at where the anime cuts off, and I’d love to get my hands on the manga and read that from the start just to get more of Kaya.
