If it weren’t for the fact that I already learned a specific piece of news prior to watching this episode (or that piece of news not being present in the Netflix broadcast of the episode, which thankfully that news was present), this post probably would’ve involved a lot of me whining. Think closer to my post about the final episode of Wash It All Away. First, let’s cover the episode itself.
Disappointing to see that Netflix didn’t add subtitles for the episode title to the episode this time. Boo! Do the episode title subtitle again!
Anyway, we get our proper introduction to the girl we first met in the previous episode: Mai Otohime, a Unicorn who excels in basically anything having to do with water. Knowledge? She’s got it. Sports? She’s got it. Cool. Okay. And as we saw last episode, she has two personalities: the timid one and the sporty one.
Anyway, she challenges Ogami to a duel, because she wants to date him. That’s right, not to date Noren. Unfortunately, the organizers of this whole debacle thought through what would happen if someone who’s into *girls* (which Mai isn’t, but like, we can’t ignore the possibility that there could be people like that in this world that just don’t get focus because they don’t challenge Noren) chose to challenge Noren: Ogami still gets to date Noren if he wins, but if he loses, not only does Ogami have to stop dating Noren, but the spot for Noren’s boyfriend is open, because the competition only allows boys to date Noren.
She decides to challenge Ogami and Noren to a surfing match, though there’s one big issue…neither have done surfing before. The older students work together, and decide that the upcoming three day weekend will be dedicated to an ocean training camp.
We don’t get to see that ocean training camp in this episode, though. Usually, this is where I’d give a complaint about a plot thread being left open. Because of some news, though, this complaint is dead in the water!
Anyway, we also have a section of the episode dedicated to a parent teacher conference. While Ogami waits for his parent representative to arrive, we do see some characters interact with him, like Eiji, who’s waiting for Kazuma to arrive.
Ogami asked Nekota to help, and at first, I thought that Nekota was going to just come as himself. However, Nekota decides to dress up in feminine clothes instead, which I personally found to be more entertaining.
After the parent teacher conference, however, Ogami decides to head up to the roof to be alone, because words from that parent teacher conference impacted him, making him try to figure out his life. Chisato comes up and has a conversation with him. Noren also comes up, and the three brood in their thoughts together, mainly to get themselves ready for the ocean training camp.
And then, the piece of news that had me kill every single complaint in my throat: we had a confirmation after the credits scene that season 2 is coming, with me initially finding this out by looking it up online prior to watching this episode. And with the fact that this episode has an ending that clearly suggested that the plot still has more to tell, I’m excited to see where season 2 takes this story.
